37+ of the Best Honeymoon Destinations in the USA

Are you looking for the best honeymoon destinations in the USA?

Let me start by saying congratulations on making the big plans to tie the knot (Insert party emoji here). Although wedding planning can be fun, it’s not as exciting as planning the honeymoon (in my personal, not-at-all biased travel blogger opinion).

My husband and I took an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon 6 years ago and its one of the reasons I am hooked on all things USA travel. It was magical!

No passport? Limited time off? Zero interest in flying all the way across the world? Whatever the reason for wanting to stay closer to home…No worries! There are SO MANY epic honeymoon destinations right here in the USA.

  • Best time to visit: April, May, August, September, and October for the best weather and prices
  • Where to Stay: Sheraton Kauai Resort

Imagine a honeymoon destination where romance embraces nature, creating a magical haven for newlyweds – that’s Kauai, the ‘Garden Isle’ of Hawaii. It’s definitely the most secluded and least crowded out of the four main islands (Maui, Big Island, Oahu, and Kauai).

With its lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, perfect blue waters, and stunning landscapes, Kauai is a paradise that promises an unforgettable escape.

One of the must-do activities in Kauai is witnessing the majestic Napali Coast revealing dramatic cliffs, hidden caves, and beaches inaccessible by land. There are multiple ways to see the Napali Coast, but the best experience is through a thrilling helicopter or boat tour.

Kauai is a haven for adventure seekers, with its stunning mountain peaks and lush jungles. It offers plenty of opportunities to explore the outdoors – from kayaking the Wailua River to horseback riding along the southern shore.

Hiking the Waimea Canyon, known as the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific’, is another popular experience in Kauai. This 3,000-foot-deep gorge is a picturesque sight that will leave you breathless.

But Kauai is not just about thrilling escapades; it’s also about slowing down and soaking in the blissful ambiance of its pristine beaches. Stop by Poipu Beach for a romantic stroll, or take a dip in the refreshingly cool waters of Hanalei Bay.

15. Willamette Valley, Oregon

vineyard in the Willamette valley-best honeymoons in the us for wine-lovers
  • Best time to visit: June-October
  • Where to stay: The Alison Inn & Spa

Tucked away in the heart of Oregon, the Willamette Valley is a totally underrated honeymoon destination with over 700 wineries in the region. With serene, natural beauty, plenty of wine and romantic retreats that make it the perfect destination for newlywed couples celebrating their nuptials.

If you’re looking to relax in nature after your big day, then this is it! The valley’s landscape is something else; from rolling hills, luscious vineyards, and charming towns with plenty of history.

The region’s reputation as a wine lover’s paradise precedes it, particularly famous for the Pinot Noir vineyards. Make sure you book into at least one of the wine tastings and one vineyard tour (You could these tours as a day trip from Portland!)

No matter the time of year, you’ll find the landscape spectacular, but in Autumn is when the vineyards are particularly impressive as they turn from resplendent golds to deep reds. Sipping world-class wines while surrounded by the valley’s serene beauty in autumn is the perfect place to make some spectacular memories.

Many of the secluded bed-and-breakfasts or luxury hotels offer spa treatments where you can relax and unwind too. The region is fairly well known for the ‘farm to fork’ cuisine, made with locally sourced ingredients meaning it’s the perfect place for foodies too!

Whatever your preference, it’ll be a honeymoon to remember.

Adventurous Honeymoons in the USA

16. Olympic Peninsula, Washington

If you can’t decide between celebrating your honeymoon at the beach, in the mountains, or in a forest, then consider heading to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. Fans of Twilight will be familiar with the area and enjoy visiting destinations from the series like Forks, Port Angeles, and La Push beach.

Outdoorsy couples will find no shortage of adventures in Olympic National Park. Hike through the Hoh Rainforest, go paddleboarding on Lake Crescent, or if you’re feeling extra adventurous, backpack the Seven Lakes Basin and High Divide Trail. This 21-mile loop takes you through a forest of red cedar and Sitka spruce up to a ridge with sweeping 360° views of Mt. Olympus and a series of turquoise alpine lakes. The backpacking trip is best completed over 2-3 days and requires a permit that you can get on rec.gov.

Of course no honeymoon would be complete without a trip to the beach. The Olympic Peninsula has a number of public beaches to choose from, but the Kalaloch Beaches in Olympic National Park provide West-facing views that are perfect for a romantic sunset.

Staying in a cabin at the Kalaloch Lodge puts you right on the beach and gives you a little extra privacy for your honeymoon.

Our #1 favorite activity to do in Sedona is to take a helicopter tour of the region. From high above, you can see all the stunning red rocks and remote canyons that make Sedona so special.

We also love to hike to Devil’s Bridge and Cathedral Rock. The stunning views over Coconino National Forest and the fun of scrambling up to a natural sandstone arch are unforgettable experiences.

18. Alaskan Cruise

  • Best time to visit: June- August
  • Where to Stay: Cruise Ship!

I can speak from personal experience here…An Alaskan Cruise is one of the very VERY best honeymoon ideas in the US. It’s a perfect blend of relaxation (sea days), and adventures (excursions). It requires very little planning as you are likely exhausted from wedding planning (I was anyways).

Throughout the duration of the cruise, you will get to stop at several different ports each with unique sights and activities. Excursion highlights include a helicopter ride complete with a glacial landing, snorkeling (yes in Alaska!), and a boat safari ride.

You can of course choose your excursions based on the interests of you and your spouse! But, the sea days are equally as amazing as you will spot wildlife, glaciers up close, and float through amazing Fjords.

  • Best time to visit: Mid- July through September, when the trails and roads are open and snow-free and the weather is pleasant
  • Where to Stay: Great Northern Resort, a beautiful and comfortable lodge, with friendly staff and a delicious breakfast each morning

If you’re an outdoorsy couple looking for an unforgettable and unique way to kick off your United States honeymoon, consider a getaway to Glacier National Park. This park is home to towering mountains, fields of wildflowers, and endless adventure around every corner!

Any visit to Glacier should start off with the driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which has been routinely voted as one of the most scenic drives in the United States. It’s even the first road ever to achieve the title of each a National Historic Place, National Historic Landmark, and Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

This dramatic road winds through 50 miles of the park, from Lake McDonald to its St. Mary section, with long stretches of the road that are literally carved into the Rocky Mountains. Along the way, you’ll pass ancient glaciers, rushing waterfalls, and, with any luck, some adorable mountain goat friends!

No matter how you choose to spend your adventurous honeymoon, there’s plenty of unforgettable adventures in Glacier for you two to start off your marriage with a bang!

Road Trip Honeymoons in the US

22. Big Island Road Trip

road trip honeymoon around the Big Island
  • Best time to visit:
  • Where to Stay: Two nights in Hilo, two nights in Volcano, and two nights in Kona

Although its extremely hard to pick a favorite Hawaiian Island…the Big Island maaaaay be mine. It’s so diverse and full of exciting adventures!

When we visited, we just spent 3 days there, BUT it would be the PERFECT road trip honeymoon in the US.

Start your road trip by flying into the Hilo airport. Start your honeymoon off with some good ol’ waterfall chasing. Near the Hilo airport, you’ll find Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, and PeePee Falls. Then, grab your headlamp and head to Kaumana Cave to explore a massive lava tube.

Make sure to save time to explore the quaint downtown and stop at the Hilo farmer’s market.

Then continue south on your road trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (my personal favorite). Here, you can hike, take scenic drives, find more lava tubes, and if you are lucky, catch a glimpse of lava from the Kilauea overlook. The visitor center is also great to learn a bit about the island and the park itself.

There are so many cozy B&B’s to choose from near the park that will be the cherry on top of this adventurous honeymoon (we stayed in this one).

Finally end your road trip by heading up to the sunny west side of the island. Kona is home to some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Have a beach day (or two) and end your honeymoon with a Nighttime Manta Ray Snorkel!

(Book your Manta Ray Snorkel Tours here!)

Other stops along the way could include snorkeling or scuba diving at John Pennekamp State Park, taking a sea plane tour, biking along the Overseas Heritage Trail, clear kayaking through the Mangroves, and deep sea fishing.

After reaching Key West, the southernmost point of the continental US, spend some time soaking up all the island vibes. You will find so many beach bars and restaurants to enjoy!

24. Big Sur on California’s Highway 1

Bixby Bridge during honeymoon road trip in the usa

A road trip down California’s famous Pacific Coast Highway is a very romantic way to spend your honeymoon in the USA.  Taking in some of the most beautiful vistas in the state, you will see natural wonders, wildlife, rocky promontories, and amazing bridges.

Some of the best stops along the coastal route south of San Francisco include Monterey, an ex-fishing and cannery town, Big Sur for the views, and Cambria for its proximity to Hearst Castle, the Elephant Seals of San Simeon, and Morro Rock.

For a heart-stopping view out over the rocky coastline, visit Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur.  Accessible to all budgets, you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy the sea and Santa Lucia Mountain Range views.

road trip along California’s Highway 1 would ideally be about one week in length, but you can explore a good part of this coastal road in 2-3 days.  Leave room for those romantic dinners, whale-watching off the Monterey coast, and sunset hikes in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.

37. Napa Valley, California

Whether you’re a wine-lover or not, Napa Valley is the perfect place to spend a romantic honeymoon in the USA. The beautiful scenery, hot springs, incredible food and wine tastings will give you plenty to do while still relaxing with your new spouse.

I recommend flying into the Oakland or San Francisco airports and renting a car for a beautiful scenic drive into Napa. You’ll also need a car to get around because the entire Napa Valley stretches about 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, including over 400 wineries!

If you’re at all interested in wine, you’ll want to book a few wine tastings and tours at one of the many top rated wineries in the world. There are so many great options to choose from including Chateau Montelena in Calistoga which is one of the most romantic wineries to visit, and one of the oldest in Napa Valley. The beautiful chateau sits beside a Japanese garden built by one of the previous owners. The wine is also incredible!

If Europe was on your honeymoon wish list, you can find a glimpse of the French countryside while you sip on a flight of delicious sparkling wine at Domaine Carneros. Or take a castle tour and tasting at Castello di Amorosa which feels like you’re in the heart of Tuscany.

After a long, hard day of wine tastings, make time to relax with a mud bath or massage treatment and then soak in the hot spring pools of Calistoga. Or dress up and head out to dinner at one of the many incredible restaurants in Napa!

There are several well-renowned restaurants in Yountville specifically to consider including several popular spots by Thomas Keller. Be sure to visit Restoration Hardware for a romantic dinner or dessert in the most beautiful dining room I’ve ever seen covered in chandeliers and uplit trees.

If you choose to spend your honeymoon in Napa Valley, I can almost guarantee you’ll want to make it a yearly tradition. Cheers!

38. Stowe, Vermont

The best time to visit Vermont on a honeymoon is during fall to see the dreamy foliage spread across the state and experience the lovely autumnal activities during October.

While Vermont is easy to drive around, Stowe is an ideal base as the town has lots going on and is close to the bigger city of Burlington and the capital, Montpelier.

In Stowe, take advantage of the shops in the Historic Downtown, drive through the Autumn Tree Tunnel at Smugglers Notch, and get as high above the vibrant foliage on the Mount Mansfield Gondola. Be sure to get off at the summit to take in the views of the town and beyond.

If you like to hike, there is a short trail to Bingham Falls or the Sterling Pond Trail. Alternatively, rent bikes and ride the 5 miles of the Stowe Recreation Path. Congratulate yourselves with a drink afterward at the von Trapp Brewing or The Alchemist Brewery.

Day trip to Burlington to see Lake Champlain, city entertainment like shows and stand up, and to pick up cider donuts at Shelburne Farm.
