Where should I stay on the Big Island? East Vs. West

Infographic showing the pros and cons of where to stay on the big island of hawaii including hilo, kona, and volcano

When choosing a hotel in the Big Island, there are a few factors to consider to ensure you have the best possible experience. Location is key, as it will determine the ease of access to popular attractions and activities. Most people choose to stay in either Hilo, Kailua-Kona, or right by the national park in Volcano.

Or if you are feeling extra adventurous, you could choose a combo of the three locations. I do highly recommend that you at least spend time in each region as they are all so unique! See how we split up our time on the Big Island here!

Kailua-Kona

If you’re looking for a beachfront getaway, consider hotels on the Kohala Coast or in Kailua-Kona (west side). This is most definitely the sunny and dry side of the island. It was actually the only time we saw the sun our entire time visiting. Kailua-Kona is also the most touristy where you’ll find the most restaurant, tours, and shop options.

Hilo

For a more laid-back and authentic Hawaiian experience, Hilo (east side) offers unique accommodations nestled in nature. You’ll find some epic waterfalls near Hilo! BUT BE PREPARED. Hilo is the rainiest city in all of the USA. This of course leads to some beautiful lush green landscapes!

Volcano

And if you want to stay right in the rainforest and near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Southeast), then grab a hotel in Volcano. This is where we stayed for all three nights and although rainy, it was truly magical. Make sure to stock up before leaving Hilo or Kona though as there aren’t a whole lot of options for food and supplies (especially after 8pm).

The Best Hotels in Kailua-Kona

Kailua-Kona is a vibrant town on the west coast of the Big Island, known for its beautiful beaches, shopping, and dining, and the famous experience of snorkeling with Manta Rays. If you’re looking for a hotel in Kailua-Kona, you’re in luck. This charming town offers the largest variety of accommodations to suit every taste and budget.

1. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai (Luxurious Option)

For a (super) luxurious beachfront experience, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is a top choice. With its stunning ocean views, private lanais, and world-class amenities, it’s the epitome of luxury. There are 7 (yes 7!) pools, swim-up bars, a golf course, and of course a full spa. You may never want to leave.

2. Holualoa Inn (Boutique Option)

If you prefer a boutique hotel, the Holualoa Inn is a hidden gem nestled in the hills above Kailua-Kona. With its lush gardens, panoramic views, and personalized service, it offers a unique and intimate experience.

3. Kona Seaside Hotel (Budget-friendly Option)

For budget-friendly (the word budget should be taken lightly when in Hawaii) options, the Kona Seaside Hotel is a great choice. It offers comfortable accommodations and is conveniently located near the heart of Kailua-Kona.

Hilo, located on the east coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, offers a different experience from the more touristy/beachy areas of the island. You’ll find a lot of unique waterfalls, short hikes, and lava tubes on the east side of the island.

1. Dolphin Bay Hotel (Budget-friendly option)

For those looking for an affordable option in Hilo, head to The Dolphin Bay Hotel. This quaint hotel is close to downtown (and the tasty Pineapples Island restaurant), exceptionally clean, and even offers papaya and fresh banana bread for breakfast.

The most luxurious option on the Hilo side of the Big Island is the beautiful Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo. This 4-star resort offers fishing, snorkeling, biking, and a tasty onsite restaurant. The ocean views do not hurt either!

Volcano National Park Stays

where to stay near volcano national park on the big island of hawaii

Volcano is my personal favorite region of the Big Island. It’s right near the entrance of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park making for easy access to check out the lava flow after dark! It’s about 2 hours from Kona and 45 minutes from Hilo.

1. Kilauea Lodge

Just steps away from the National Park (you can walk to the entrance), this is one of the more expensive and luxurious options in Volcano. You can get to the Kilauea Iki Overlook in just a 2 minute drive. There’s an on-site restaurant and hot tub to enjoy after exploring the park. There’s only 16 rooms available, so do not wait to book this one!

2, Volcano Inn (Where we stayed on the Big Island of Hawaii)

This charming bed and breakfast is located just outside Hawaii Volcano National Park in the town of Volcano, HI. The rooms are basic, but include everything you could need + cozy views of the rainforest. Breakfast (banana bread and papaya bowls) are served fresh every morning in the main building. There’s even an outdoor shared hot tub to relax after a day of hiking!
