3. Orlando, FL

castle at disney world orlando

A Mother’s Day getaway to Orlando, Florida is always in style.

Let’s face it, most of the time, trekking to Disney with kids likely means traveling to the parks with tons of accessories, snacks, and…ugh, strollers! Not this time!

May is the perfect time to make a mother-daughter trip down to the Most Magical Place on Earth. Take a quick flight into Orlando International Airport, and you’ll be on Disney property in no time!

Grab matching mickey ears (glitter ones, of course!), mother-daughter tee shirts, and get ready to hit the parks. In May, popular places like Magic Kingdom or Epcot aren’t  teeming with tourists taking over for the summer, and the weather isn’t sweltering…yet!.

You and mom can spend the morning sipping Starbucks as you stroll around the world in Epcot. Then, catch a few thrills on rides throughout one of the four Disney amusement parks. When you’re done, head on over to Disney Springs to have a fantastic dinner on the water. And, finally, be sure not to miss an evening fireworks show!

7. Savannah, GA

  • Closest Airport: Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV)
  • Best for: Sightseeing, shopping, & eating
  • Average May Temperatures: 84(high)/64(low)
  • Where to Stay: Marriott Savannah Riverfront

Whether enjoying teatime at Gryphon Tea Room, exploring the 22 public squares, walking around Forsyth Park or indulging in a praline from River Street Sweets, nothing brings mothers and daughters closer together than a getaway to Savannah, Georgia.

While frequent travelers to “The Hostess City” would argue anytime is a great time to visit, there’s something extra special about Savannah in spring, especially in May. The combination of warmer weather and longer days means the duos can be out all day sightseeing, shopping and eating.

And in Savannah, there’s ample opportunity to do all three. Also, there is potential to catch an outdoor festival or event in spring, which adds more to the overall experience.

The fun for mothers and daughters continues into the evening. Watch the sunset from a rooftop bar while toasting the day, or elevate the time together with a riverboat sunset cruise. Both are the perfect backdrops for a picture to capture the visit.

9. New York City, NY

new york city skyline at night

If you’re looking for a destination for a Mother’s Day weekend getaway, look no further than New York City! The Big Apple is the perfect place for a mother-daughter trip as the city has so much to offer, from iconic landmarks to cultural institutions to some of the best food in the country.

NYC’s food scene is unbeaten. Whether you’re looking for cheap street food or a fine dining experience, you can find it in NYC! Rubirosa, in Nolita, is one of the best pizza places in the city and is perfect for a nicer (yet still affordable) dinner.

NYC is served by three airports: JFK, LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark (EWR). The Courtyard by Marriott Midtown West is a great affordable hotel that’s a short walk away from both Hudson Yards and Penn Station.

10. Chincoteague and Assateague Islands, VA

  • Best for: Exploring Lighthouses, spotting wild ponies, and beach sun sets.
  • Average May Temperatures: 71(high)/57(low)
  • Where to Stay: Chincoteague Inn

An underrated Mother’s Day destination in the United States are the quaint islands of Chincoteague and Assateague located on the Virginia coast.

The closest airports are Baltimore (BWI) and Washington D.C. (IAD), but most people drive directly to Chincoteague.

One of the best things about Chincoteague is the lack of crowds. The island is often overlooked for Virginia Beach or Ocean City, Maryland. This means that you’ll have more time to explore with fewer crowds.

May still features warm weather for getting outside! There is a wide variety of things to do in Chincoteague for any type of mom.

Chincoteague has 30 miles of beach, perfect for relaxing or enjoying a breathtaking sunrise. History lovers can visit the Assateague Lighthouse which was built in 1833. The top of the tower features panoramic views of the area.

Nature lovers will enjoy trying to spot the local celebrities – the wild ponies. They are a wild herd and can be spotted around the island, but especially in the National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is also home to hundreds of species of birds.

Most people visit Chincoteague in the summer because of the beaches, but it is truly beautiful in May, making it a great Mother’s Day destination.

11. Mackinac Island, MI

mackinac island rock bridge charming mother's day getaway
  • Closest Airport: Pellston Emmet County (PLN)
  • Best for: Nature, lilacs, and museums
  • Average May Temperatures: 60(high)/44(low)
  • Where to Stay: Mackinac House

One of the best mother’s day weekend getaways in the USA has to be Mackinac Island.

After all, this charming island is located just off the coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and offers visitors stunning views of Lake Huron.

Additionally, you’ll love visiting in the middle of May since most local businesses are open for the season. Plus, the weather is warm but not hot. Therefore, it’s an ideal time to hike to Arch Rock in Mackinac Island State Park.

The island’s famous lilacs will also be in full bloom. Therefore, moms can enjoy these colorful flowers as they walk past stunning Victorian homes and old-world horse-drawn carriages since cars are not allowed on the island.

Other fun things to do on the island include Fort Mackinac, the Butterfly Conservatory, and the Richard & Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum

12. Chicago, IL

  • Closest Airport: Midway International
  • Best for: Architecture, food, and sightseeing
  • Average May Temperatures: 66(high)/53(low)
  • Where to Stay: The Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago

Chicago is one of my favorite places in the world.  Known as the Windy City, it has another less famous name – The Second City. It received this name from its rivalry with New York City during the skyscraper boom. Although New York City remains most famous for its tall buildings, the world’s first skyscraper was born in Chicago.

From breathtaking architecture to delicious cuisine, Chicago is an excellent destination for a weekend getaway. The weather is beautiful in May making it a good option for a mother-daughter trip.

The closest airport to Downtown Chicago is Midway International.

Exploring the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue) is a great way to spend a Saturday in Chicago.  From here you can access the River Boat Cruise during which you will be able to appreciate Chicago’s iconic skyline comprising of beautiful buildings like the Wrigley Building and the Willis Tower (formerly Sears). If you walk far enough you can visit the bean at Millenium Park.

You can also visit the Willis Tower observation deck for stunning views or spend some time at one of the museums.

If you are looking for some true Chicago style pizza,  Giordanos is one of the most famous places for Chicago-style deep-dish pizza. For a more upmarket experience, I would suggest RPM Italian Chicago.

The Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago is perfectly located at the start of the Magnificent mile and in close proximity to all attractions.

22. Pawhuska, OK

Pawhuska Oklahoma mother and daughter weekend trip
  • Closest Airport: Tulsa or Oklahoma City (OKC)
  • Best for: Small-town charm, country vibes, and
  • Average May Temperatures: 79(high)/56(low)
  • Where to stay: Pioneer Woman’s Boarding House

For a fun country western-themed Mother’s Day getaway, head to Pawhuska in Osage County, Oklahoma. This small town has undergone a renaissance in the last few years, and now it’s a popular vacation destination for those looking for a slice of down-home America with a Hollywood twist.

The town is the home of Ree Drummond, better known as The Pioneer Woman of Food Network fame. She owns several businesses around town, including the Pioneer Woman Mercantile, a lovely southern-style restaurant with a spectacular gift shop that features her cookbooks and other fun foodie-centric gifts.

You can even tour the lodge where she films her shows. The best part is the tickets are free.

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio used this town as a movie set for the movie “Killers of the Flower Moon,” so be on the lookout for film locations and prepare to hear a few stories about Leo while you’re here.

May is a great time to visit Pawhuska, as the weather is nice and there are lots of fun town events. You can also visit Bluestem Falls, the swinging bridge or the buffalo at the Tallgrass Prairie Nature Preserve.

The nearest big city is Tulsa, which has a commercial airport, though it might be easier to fly into Oklahoma City and rent a car. If you want to stay at one of Ree’s properties, check into the Pioneer Woman’s Boarding House.

  • Where to stay: The Ramble Hotel

For those considering a Colorado destination for this upcoming Mother’s Day, don’t overlook the capital city of Denver.

An advantage of choosing Denver over Boulder is the number of restaurants, bars, and activities available. From unique spots like Linger, an international street food restaurant that is set in a former mortuary, to City O’ City, a hip vegetarian haunt, there are so many places to enjoy Denver’s food scene.

As for Sunday brunch, check out one of the most fun restaurants to celebrate Mother’s Day: Lucile’s Creole Cafe, a local institution in Denver. They’re famous for their chicory coffee, fluffy biscuits with homemade jam, and fabulous bloody marys – all perfect ingredients for an unforgettable Mother’s Day Brunch.

If you are looking for some adventure, be sure to head to the nearby Rocky Mountain National Park for some epic hikes!

Denver has an international airport, so it’s easily accessible from many cities in the US. There are interesting and fun neighborhoods throughout the city, but the River Arts North district is always a great choice.

The Ramble Hotel is a great choice for travelers who love tasteful design, and it would make a special and memorable home-base for a Mother’s Day weekend.

24. Las Vegas, NV

Las Vegas for mother's Day
  • Closest Airport: Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)
  • Best for: Shows, concerts, gambling, food OR adventures and hiking!
  • Average May Temperatures: 90(high)/53(low)
  • Where to Stay: Mandalay Bay

If you are looking for a super easy Mother’s Day trip, Las Vegas should be on your list of places to visit. Early May is perfect weather-wise since it isn’t yet hot in the Nevada desert. Once it gets nearer to June, temperatures soar over 100 degrees!

Most people fly into the Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) and go straight to the Strip. The Strip is the epicenter of all things Vegas – mega-hotels, casinos, and shops. If you want to spend the weekend by the pool, Mandalay Bay is a great homebase. It is on the Strip and also has a tram to take you around.

The City of Sin isn’t as sinful now, and there are plenty of things to do other than gambling in Las Vegas! Watching one of the many shows is a good idea, and a Cirque du Soleil performance or a Las Vegas residency concert is always happening.

Plus, every meal can be at a restaurant of world-famous chefs like Gordon Ramsay, Giada De Laurentis, or Wolfgang Puck. And don’t forget the buffets; aside from the huge variety of food, some hotels like the Aria, Luxor, and Excalibur offer an all-day buffet pass.

If looking for more adventurous things to do during your time in Las Vegas, consider a day trip to Death Valley, Valley of Fire State Park, or a kayak tour to the famous Emerald Caves. If you are visiting in May and planning some outdoor adventures, be sure to get an early start to beat the heat!
