Affordable and Romantic Destinations in the USA

OKKAAYY! Here are (some of) my fav affordable and romantic destinations in the USA. If you are interested in other weekend getaways, you can check out my collection of complete and super-detailed guides (yes it’s a collection) right here!

Side note! I am recommending some affordable hotels. BUT they are not the cheapest. I like to describe myself as bougie on a budget. So, they are the best bang for your buck.

1. Viva Las Vegas

  • Why it’s affordable: Walkable city, nearby hiking, & pool days
welcome to las vegas sign

Something truly unique about Las Vegas is how accessible it is at any time of the year. You can walk the Strip during Christmastime and still enjoy blue, sunny skies and warm temperatures.

There’s also an endless list of fun things in Las Vegas to do for anniversaries and general romantic vacations, including adventurous tours, spas, and tasty buffets.

Surprisingly, Las Vegas is also a great starting point for many outdoor (and super cheap) adventures (some of my favs include Valley of Fire, Kayaking to Emerald Cave, and Red Rock Canyon).

Another great benefit of Vegas is that you can choose how much money you’re willing or not willing to spend on your trip. Aside from hotel expenses (which can also be pretty cheap during the week), most of the city is walkable, and only the attractions you choose will cost you.

Side note: Obviously, Las Vegas won’t be cheap if you are a gambler, so plan this trip accordingly. BUT, there’s so much to do WITHOUT spending a dime at the slot machine.

Affordable Stays in Las Vegas

  • Cromwell: Boutique-style hotel on the Strip with a more intimate, romantic feel than mega-resorts. Walkable to shows and great restaurants, making it perfect for couples who want convenience without the chaos.
  • Horseshoe Las Vegas: Formerly Bally’s, this hotel offers some of the largest rooms on the Strip at budget-friendly prices, especially midweek. A great option for couples who want space and location without luxury pricing.
  • Virgin Hotels Las Vegas: A modern, stylish off-Strip hotel that often comes with lower nightly rates. Staying here can save money while still keeping you close to dining, shows, and nightlife via a quick rideshare.

We also found rooms at the Mandalay to be pretty affordable and right on the strip.

Tips to Save Money in Vegas

  • Book Sunday–Thursday nights when hotel rates can be half the price of weekends, even on the Strip.
  • Check resort fees before booking — some “cheap” rooms end up costing more once nightly resort fees are added.
  • Stay mid-Strip (rather than luxury zones) to balance walkability and price while avoiding the priciest resorts.
  • Book shows early (or use same-day discount sites) to avoid inflated weekend ticket prices.
  • Choose a non-casino hotel if you want quieter nights and better value without paying for amenities you won’t use.
  • Plan one day trip (Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire) to balance out entertainment spending with low-cost outdoor experiences.
  • Use rideshare strategically — walk between nearby hotels and only rideshare for longer distances to avoid stacked fees.
  • Eat off the Strip at least once per day where prices are noticeably lower for the same quality.

2. A Bash in Nashville

  • Why it’s affordable: Free live music everywhere, hiking, local parks, and free museums.

Although Nashville has a reputation for being expensive, it doesn’t have to be. It’s a great, affordable, and romantic destination as there is an abundance of energy and live (free) entertainment everywhere you go. The energy is truly contagious and will leave you both having the time of your lives.

There are also hiking trails, one-of-a-kind dining experiences, scenic horseback adventures, the world-famous Grand Ole Opry, free museums, murals (here’s an affordable mural scavenger hunt), and so much more.

If you both have country roots or an interest in this kind of setting, Nashville is the perfect getaway for you.

Affordable and Romantic Stays in Nashville

  • The Russell Nashville: Located in East Nashville, this boutique hotel offers colorful rooms, lower nightly rates, and a neighborhood vibe. Perfect for couples who want charm, local restaurants, and fewer crowds.
  • Residence Inn (where we always stay): One of the best-value downtown hotels, especially midweek. Spacious rooms, included breakfast, and a central location make this a solid choice for couples wanting convenience without luxury prices. This way, we don’t have to rent a car and can walk back and forth between the Broadway bars.
  • La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Nashville Downtown: A dependable, no-frills option that’s ideal if you want to keep lodging costs low while still staying close to the action. With included breakfast and pet-friendly rooms, it’s a solid pick for couples who plan to spend most of their time exploring the city rather than hanging out at the hotel.

Tips to Save Money in Nashville

  • Stay Sunday–Thursday for significantly lower hotel rates
  • Choose neighborhoods like East Nashville or The Gulch for better value
  • Look for hotels with included breakfast to cut food costs
  • Skip Broadway hotels if you want quieter nights and lower prices
  • All bars on Broadway have free cover, so if you drink a bit before you go out, you can save some money!

3. A Lake Weekend in Traverse City

  • Why it’s affordable: Outdoor activities, lake days, lighthouse walks, & picnics
stairs leading down to lake in Lake Traverse

A nice cozy waterfront lake cabin and the slowness of the birds chirping in the morning might be your idea of a romantic getaway. If so, head to Traverse City, Michigan. The small lake town sits on the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay and offers a quiet and relaxing getaway for couples.

You can enjoy wine tastings, lighthouse walks, local spas, and a beachfront spot to relax for a few days. Traverse City is one of the most affordable romantic destinations and offers ideal weather conditions from June to September.

Affordable & Romantic Stays in Traverse City

  • Grand Beach Resort: A classic, budget-friendly lakefront option with private beach access and sunrise views over East Bay. It’s a great pick for couples who want the romance of staying on the water without paying downtown boutique prices—especially appealing for shoulder-season trips.
  • Delamar Traverse City : One of the most romantic waterfront hotels in the area, especially in the shoulder seasons when rates dip. Great for couples who want sunsets, lakeside walks, and an upscale feel at a better value. This one is definitely more romantic than affordable.
  • Sugar Beach Resort Hotel: A more affordable lakeside option just outside downtown. Ideal if you want beach access, quiet mornings, and lower nightly rates while still being a short drive from wineries and town.

Budget-friendly tips in Traverse City

  • Visit in May, early June, or October to get lake views and winery access without peak summer pricing. July and August rates jump quickly.
  • Stay just outside downtown (East Bay or near US-31) for lower nightly rates while still being a short drive to restaurants and the waterfront.
  • Book midweek nights (Sunday–Thursday) when hotels and resorts often drop prices significantly compared to weekends.
  • Choose a hotel with beach access or included amenities so you don’t need to pay for separate activities every day.
  • Plan wine tastings on weekdays, when many wineries offer lower tasting fees and a more relaxed experience.
  • Pack picnic supplies and enjoy lakeside meals at Clinch Park or East Bay Park to offset restaurant costs.
  • Visit Sleeping Bear Dunes early or late in the day to avoid parking congestion and paid shuttle times during peak season.

4. The Southern Charm of Charleston

Why it’s affordable: Many local parks, walkable and photogenic downtown, relaxing atmosphere

historic street in Charleston

Charleston is another great spot for couples looking to slow down and enjoy one another without breaking the bank. Here, you can do as much or as little as you prefer without pressure to overspend or overexert yourselves.

Some affordable activities include picnicking at one of Charleston’s county parks, (cheap) wine tasting at Deep Water Vineyard (with tours and live music), or taking photos along Rainbow Row.

If willing to splurge a bit, you and your date can take a cooking class at Zero George, kayak on Shem Creek, or soak up the spa treatments at a local hotel.

You can pick and choose your weekend in Charleston to suit both personalities and budgets, and you’ll be glad you didn’t miss out on the chance to experience the southern charm.

Affordable Hotels in Charleston

  • Hotel Indigo Mount Pleasant: A stylish boutique option just outside the Historic District, offering lower nightly rates while still keeping you close to downtown Charleston. Ideal for couples who want charm, comfort, and easy parking without the premium prices of central Charleston hotels.
  • Hilton Garden Inn Charleston Waterfront: A dependable, comfortable option with waterfront views and consistently reasonable rates—especially midweek. Great for couples who want Hilton-quality comfort and a quieter location while still being a short drive or walk from downtown attractions.
  • Harborside at Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina: If you want waterfront views without staying directly in the Historic District, Harborside delivers a relaxed, resort-style atmosphere. It feels like a romantic escape while still being close enough to explore Charleston by ferry or a short drive.

Money-Saving Tips while in Charleston

  • Stay just outside the Historic District in areas like West Ashley or Mount Pleasant for lower nightly rates while still being a short drive to downtown.
  • Book Sunday–Thursday nights to avoid weekend wedding and event pricing, which can significantly increase hotel costs.
  • Choose a hotel with included breakfast or evening wine receptions to cut food costs in a city where dining adds up quickly.
  • Park once and walk—walkable hotels help you avoid expensive downtown parking fees and constant rideshares.
  • Visit between January–March (excluding holiday weekends) for some of the best hotel deals and lighter crowds.
  • Skip oceanfront stays and plan a half-day trip to Folly Beach or Sullivan’s Island instead—you’ll save on lodging while still getting beach time.
  • Check for AAA or teacher discounts, which are commonly offered at Charleston hotels but often overlooked.

5. Cozy Cabin Getaway in Broken Bow, OK

  • Why it’s affordable: You won’t want to leave your cozy cabin + hiking trails and outdoor adventures
cozy cabin in broken bow oklahoma

If you’re looking for a wallet-friendly romantic getaway, Broken Bow, OK is an excellent choice. This charming town offers activities that suit any taste and budget. It’s one of my favorite road trips from DFW (and super dog-friendly!)

If you decide to leave your cozy cabin, you can check out the nearby hikes, try to catch your dinner, or rent a kayak or canoe to explore the lake.

For foodies, the town has numerous affordable eateries that serve local specialties like barbecue and hearty Southern breakfasts. Plus, the town has SO MANY cabins to choose from, so you’ll surely be able to find one that won’t break the bank.

So whether you’re celebrating an anniversary or just need a romantic break, Broken Bow is a smart choice for a budget-friendly yet romantic escape.

Romantic and Affordable Stays in Broken Bow

  • Beavers Bend Cabins: A popular option for couples looking for classic cabin vibes near Beavers Bend State Park. Many cabins include hot tubs, fireplaces, and wooded settings at more affordable price points than ultra-luxury rentals.
  • River Ridge Cabins: Ideal for couples who want a peaceful, tucked-away stay with mountain and forest views. These cabins often offer better value midweek and are perfect for unplugging together.
  • Hochatown Cabins:A great choice if you want to stay close to restaurants, wineries, and attractions while still enjoying a private cabin experience. Offers a wide range of cabin sizes and price points.
  • Copper Leaf Cabins: Known for well-maintained cabins with romantic touches like soaking tubs and outdoor decks. A solid mid-range option for couples wanting comfort without ultra-luxury pricing.

Money Saving Tips in Broken Bow

  • Book Sunday–Thursday nights when cabin rates are significantly lower than weekends.
  • Travel in late winter or early spring for better pricing and fewer crowds (except holiday weekends).
  • Choose a smaller one-bedroom cabin—many have the same amenities (hot tub, fireplace) as larger luxury cabins at a lower cost.
  • Stay near Hochatown if you want to minimize driving and gas costs while still being close to activities.
  • Bring groceries from home or stop before arriving—food options are limited and more expensive once you’re in town.
  • Look for cabins with firewood included to avoid paying premium prices locally.
  • Plan free or low-cost activities like hiking in Beavers Bend State Park, lake walks, and stargazing to balance out lodging costs.

6. Historic Weekend Getaway to Boston, MA

  • Why it’s affordable: Self-guided walking tours, historical landmarks, no need for a rental car.
boston skyline

Boston is full of affordable activities and delicious eats perfect for a weekend getaway with your significant other! Take a stroll through the historic Freedom Trail or pack a picnic and relax on the Boston Common.

If you’re looking for a more adventurous activity, hop on a bike and explore the Emerald Necklace, a chain of beautiful parks throughout the city. For dinners out, try out local favorites like Neptune Oyster or the Italian-style pizzeria, Regina’s.

Make sure to stay downtown to avoid having to get a rental car and utilize the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to get around and save money. Buses, commuter rails, and the subway are all common ways to navigate the city, and certain areas are very walkable.

Where to Stay in Boston

  • The Boxer Boston: A boutique hotel with a cozy, romantic feel located right near the North End. It’s ideal for couples who want to walk everywhere and enjoy historic streets, cafes, and waterfront paths.
  • The Godfrey Hotel Boston: Stylish and centrally located, this hotel often has better rates than nearby luxury properties. Great for couples who want comfort and walkability without paying premium prices.
  • CitizenM Boston North Station: A modern, budget-friendly option with smaller rooms but a great location. Perfect for couples who plan to spend most of their time exploring on foot rather than hanging out in their hotel room.
  • The Verb Hotel: A fun, retro-style hotel near Fenway Park with a more relaxed vibe. It’s a good choice for couples who want something unique and are okay staying slightly outside the most tourist-heavy areas.

Budget-Friendly Tips in Boston

  • Stay near a subway (T) stop rather than directly in the most historic areas to save on nightly rates while keeping the city walkable.
  • Book Sunday–Thursday nights, when hotel prices are noticeably lower than weekends.
  • Visit in January–March for the best hotel deals (excluding holiday weekends), especially if you don’t mind cooler weather.
  • Walk the Freedom Trail instead of booking multiple paid tours—it’s free and covers most major landmarks.
  • Choose hotels that waive destination fees or include perks like coffee or bike rentals to cut extra costs.
  • Eat in neighborhoods like the North End or Cambridge where you’ll find excellent food at better prices than tourist-heavy areas.
  • Skip a rental car—Boston is one of the easiest U.S. cities to explore entirely on foot and by public transit.

7. A drive up the Minnesota North Shore

Why it’s affordable: Outdoors, outdoors, outdoors!!!

view of palisade head on lake superior up the minnesota north shore

If you’re looking for an affordable and romantic getaway, the Minnesota North Shore is the perfect choice (in my not-so-biased opinion). It’s home to some of the most amazing state parks, waterfalls, and Lake Superior views!

Highlights include exploring the Gooseberry Falls State Park, picnicking at Black Beach, skipping rocks at Split Rock Lighthouse, and hiking in Tettegouche State Park.

Make sure to purchase a $35 MN State Park Pass to gain entry into all the parks!

Although the lakeside stays are quite spendy, there are many hotels available at a much more affordable rate. We’ve always stayed in the Americinn’s along the way and have had great experiences!

Budget-friendly Stays on the MN North Shore

  • Larsmont Cottages on Lake Superior: A cozy, romantic lakeside option with fireplaces and private balconies. Rates are often more affordable outside peak summer and fall weekends, making it a great couples retreat.
  • Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts: A collection of lakefront resorts offering a range of room styles and price points. Ideal if you want amenities like hot tubs and shoreline access without luxury pricing.
  • Grand Superior Lodge: Located near Gooseberry Falls, this lodge is perfect for couples who want easy access to hiking and waterfalls while still enjoying a comfortable stay.
  • AmericInn by Wyndham Tofte: A more budget-friendly option that still puts you close to the action. Great for couples prioritizing location and road-trip flexibility over resort amenities.

Money Saving Tips MN North Shore

  • Visit in May, early June, or late October for lower rates and fewer crowds compared to peak summer and fall color season.
  • Book midweek nights to score better deals at lodges and resorts along Highway 61.
  • Stay in smaller towns like Tofte or Two Harbors instead of Grand Marais to save on lodging while keeping easy access to sights.
  • Pack snacks and picnic meals—dining options are limited and can be pricey in tourist hubs.
  • Use state parks for entertainment—a Minnesota State Park Pass is far cheaper than paid attractions.
  • Plan waterfall hikes (many are free and roadside-accessible) to avoid paying for guided activities.

8. Colorado Springs, CO

Why it’s affordable: Epic hikes, breweries, and proximity to Denver.

garden of the gods

Colorado Springs is an outdoor-lovers paradise and such an affordable & romantic destination in the USA! Grab a cheap flight to Denver (I recently found one from DFW for $67), then make the 1-hour drive south to Colorado Springs.

Some cheap attractions in CO Springs include exploring the massive Garden of the Gods, hiking up the infamous Manitou Incline, driving to the top of Pike’s Peak, or window shopping in the cute nearby town of Manitou Springs.

There’s also no shortage of affordable hotels to choose from that are still close to all the action. Tip! Fairfield Inn and Suites is a great option with rooms under 100 dollars + free breakfast!

Affordable & Romantic Stays in Colorado Springs

  • Garden of the Gods Resort and Club: An upscale-feeling stay with incredible mountain views that can be surprisingly affordable during shoulder seasons. Great for couples wanting scenery and comfort.
  • Cliff House at Pikes Peak: Located in Manitou Springs, this historic hotel offers charm, walkability, and easy access to trails and shops—ideal for a romantic base near the mountains.
  • Kinship Landing: A modern, community-focused hotel with smaller rooms and lower nightly rates. Perfect for couples who plan to spend most of their time exploring outdoors.
  • Best Western Plus Peak Vista Inn: A solid value stay with mountain views, including breakfast, and easy access to major attractions—great for budget-conscious couples.

Budget Tips in CO Springs

  • Visit in April–May or late September–October for lower hotel rates and great hiking weather.
  • Book hotels with included breakfast to save money before early hiking days.
  • Plan free outdoor activities—Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon Open Space, and many trailheads have no entrance fees.
  • Skip peak summer weekends, when prices rise due to festivals and Front Range travelers.

More Tips for planning an affordable weekend getaway in the USA

Before we get to the goods, here are my favorite tips for saving money while you travel!

  1. Plan your trip during the week if possible (Yeah, I know…work gets in the way of that, but if you can take off a few days during the week, you will save a lot of money).
  2. Be flexible in your destination (in order to find the cheapest flights)–Use the explore section of Google Flights to check out the best deals.
  3. Stop at the grocery store for breakfast and lunch foods…because no one can afford to go out to eat for 3 meals a day…if you can, let’s be friends 😉
  4. Spend a lot of time in the great outdoors (Hellooooo hiking trails)
  5. Check Airbnb, Expedia, and other search engines to ensure you are getting the best price on hotels/stays.
  6. Use the DiscoverCars Search Engine to find the best deals on rental cars

No matter what you want, there’s something affordable for all couples across the country. Set aside your busy schedules and take time to remind yourselves why you’re a team in the first place. You deserve it!
