Weekend Trips from Atlanta, Georgia

I recently road-tripped through the southeastern states and instantly fell in love with the area. There were SO many amazing hikes, waterfalls, and things to do. I knew I wanted to explore more! Soo, I of course reached out to the area’s experts to include their FAVORITE weekend trips from Atlanta.

P.S. ::: If you know me at all, you know I LOVE to travel with my pup. Sooo, most of these are dog-friendly weekend trips (or can be adapted to be) from Atlanta, GA.

Dog-Friendly Weekend Trips from Atlanta

Chattanooga, TN

Rock City Gardens- Lover's Leap overlook

Distance from Atlanta: 118 miles

Chattanooga is an outdoor-lovers paradise. From epic waterfalls, indoor an outdoor rock climbing, to a charming downtown there is something to make everyone happy!

If bringing your dog along on this weekend trip from Atlanta, I recommend walking the dog-friendly Walnut Street bridge, grabbing a bite to eat on a patio overlooking the river, and partaking in a ghost tour around the city. The next day, be sure to check out Rock City Gardens (as pictured above). It is an amazing dog-friendly attraction where you can walk through caves, see 7 states from the overlook, grab a bite to eat, and marvel at Fairyland Caverns.

If taking this weekend trip from Atlanta without a dog, you can rock climb at the tallest indoor rock wall, marvel at an underground waterfall (Ruby Falls), and take the incline railway to the top of Lookout Mountain.

Helen, GA

Are you ready to escape to this European gem for the weekend? Okkkaaayy… maybe you aren’t truly in Germany…but Helen, GA is the cutest German village in the United States.

While in Helen, you can stroll the quaint streets, tube the river, ride the alpine slide, and go hunting for more waterfalls.

Helen is also dog-friendly so no need to leave the best friend at home!

Fall Creek Falls State Park

Fall Creek Falls overlook

Distance from Atlanta: 185 miles

Fall Creek Falls State Park is the PERFECT weekend trip from Atlanta. Seriously… it is one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen and super accessible.

Once arriving at the State park, grab a parking spot at the Fall Creek Falls Overlook and take the short walk to see this view (above). If you are up for more of an adventure, be sure to hike down to the base of the falls. It is a short, but rocky hike to more epic views.

Fall Creek Falls State Park Quick Facts:

  • Physical Address: 2009 Village Camp Rd, Spencer, TN 38585
  • Cost: Free
  • Hours: Day use areas close at sunset (gates leading to the falls are locked).
  • Camping: 200+ campsites, Reserve your site HERE.
  • Hiking: 56 miles of trails
  • Other Things to do: Canopy Challenge, Nature Center, golf course, and 4 different playgrounds.

Nantahala National Forest

Distance from Atlanta: 109 miles

A true hidden gem in the Southeastern United States. Before road-tripping through the area, I had never heard of the Nantahala National Forest. AND LET ME TELL YOU… I am not really sure how this is still a “hidden gem”.

The Nanthala National Forest is home to epic hikes (as seen in the Pickens Nose hike pictured above), magnificent waterfalls, and creepy tunnels (Stumphouse tunnel).

If wanting an extra magical time, be sure to visit during peak fall colors. This area typically peaks in the 3rd-4th week in October.

Weekend Trips from Atlanta for the Nature-lover

Smoky Mountains National Park

Experienced by Deanne at Scenic and Savvy

Overlook of the Smoky Mountains

Distance from Atlanta: 191 miles

Looking for a weekend trip from Atlanta that is closer to nature? Head to Great Smoky Mountains National Park – the country’s most visited national park. Within a few hours drive from Atlanta you can be surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, wildflowers and wildlife.

There are a variety of things to do in the Smokies. Hiking is one of the best ways to see Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Walk on the Appalachian Trail. Hike to a waterfall. Bring a picnic and dine in the shadow of the Smokies. Trails range from easy to challenging. Whichever you choose, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views.

The highest point in the park – Clingman’s Dome observation tower – provides a sweeping panorama. On a clear day you can see for 100 miles.

Drive the scenic Newfound Gap or the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail to see gorgeous mountain scenery and view wildlife in their natural habitat.

After a full fun day in the park, head to your rental cabin high in the mountains. There is no shortage of scenic accommodations located just outside the park overlooking the majestic mountain range. The 100 Mile View cabin in Sevierville offers breathtaking views from the hot tub on the deck.

Whichever way you decide to spend your time in the park, the Smoky Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for a scenic weekend getaway.

Blue Ridge, GA

Girl crossing a river in Blue Ridge, GA

Distance from Atlanta: 93 miles

If you dream of an action-packed weekend full of outdoor adventure or a relaxing place to isolate from the crazy world we live in, a road trip to Blue Ridge, Georgia, is what you need.

Pack your car with your road trip essentials and head north on I-75 out of Atlanta for a 90-minute ride to Blue Ridge, Georgia. Then tuck yourself into a secluded cabin in the mountains surrounded by nothing but silence and trees. Wrap yourself up in a warm blanket and sit on the back patio sipping bourbon enjoying your peaceful mountain retreat for a couple of days. Or pack your itinerary with all of the things Blue Ridge has to offer.

Start with apple picking in the local orchard. Then go fly-fishing in the trout fishing capital of the world. Sip on unique and hoppy brews during Happy Hour at Grumpy Old Men’s Brewery (may I suggest my fav, Ale Jefe).

Begin the Appalachian Trail, which will provide you with a breath of fresh air, a bit of exercise, and the most dreamy views of the mountains. Float leisurely down the Toccoa River in a hot pink tube. Catch a drive-in movie at the Swan Drive-in (perfect for a socially distanced movie experience). Chase waterfalls and fireflies. And become a believer at Expedition Big Foot.

Stroll the unique boutiques and shops on Main Street in downtown Blue Ridge. And when you are hungry for a meal of comfort food that will bring back memories of grandma, order up fried chicken, collard greens, and fried green tomatoes at Southern Charm Cafe in downtown Blue Ridge. The cinnamony goodness of their apple butter slathered on a warm biscuit will warm your soul.

Weekend Trips from Atlanta for the History-lover

Savannah, GA

Experienced by Sydney at A World in Reach

Fountain in Savannah , GA

Distance from Atlanta: 248 miles

If you’re in need of a fun-filled weekend getaway from Atlanta, consider spending a long weekend in Savannah. Whether you’re into exploring historic homes, sampling delicious southern cuisine, or learning about haunted history, there’s something in Savannah for everyone.

Savannah’s Historic District is one of the most beautiful spots in the United States and it’s worth spending at least a day wandering around. Make sure to visit one or two of the historic homes in town in order to learn more about Savannah’s past – the Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters is one of the most fascinating, and the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is a must for current or former Girl Scouts.

Roam around the Historic District, admiring the beautiful homes and exploring the 22 historic squares before taking a break in Forsyth Park. In the evening, book a spot on one of the haunted Savannah ghost tours – you can find family-friendly tours as well as more adult-focused ones (there’s even a haunted bar crawl!).

When picking a place to stay in Savannah, you’ll want to choose somewhere within walking distance of the main sights. Hotels on the outskirts of town are cheaper, but what you’ll save in hotel costs you’ll spend on transportation. There are tons of lovely hotels in the Historic District at every price point. The Andaz Savannah is perfect for something a bit more luxurious, while the Thunderbird Inn is a fun, budget-friendly choice.

Savannah is only about 3.5 hours from Atlanta. Just hop on I-75 South down to I-16, which you’ll take East all the way to Savannah.

Weekend Trips from Atlanta for Music and Art-lovers

Nashville, TN

Experienced by Natasha at the Great Ocean Road

Nashville, TN skyline

Distance from Atlanta: 250 miles

For a culture-packed weekend trip from Atlanta, head to Nashville, Tennessee! Located less 4-hours drive from Atlanta, the Tennessee capital is often referred to as the Music City and Capital of Country Music.

Start off in downtown Nashville, where you can visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum where you can learn about legendary performers and songwriters as well as check out some memorabilia. Nearby, you’ll find the Ryman auditorium. This famous venue has hosted the likes of Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton and continues to host concerts to this today.

Every night, you can hear live music at many of the bars and restaurants throughout Nashville. Check out the Wildhorse Saloon. This 3-story bar offers live music and free line-dancing lessons, as well as serving up great southern food. Another famous spot is the Bluebird Cafe, which is known for hosting its open-mic nights for aspiring artists.

When it comes to accommodations, Nashville has plenty of great options to suit every budget. For a great mid-range option downtown, we recommend the Drury Plaza Hotel. For a more unique option, check out The Russel, a stunning boutique hotel in East Nashville.

Athens, GA

As experienced by Alanna of Periodic Adventures

bookstore in Athens, GA

Distance from Atlanta: 72 miles

Located just over an hour from Atlanta is the small college town, Athens! Known for the University of Georgia Bulldawgs (our football team), Athens is the perfect weekend getaway destination from Atlanta.

Stay near downtown Athens for the best experience, since so much is always happening downtown. Top hotels within walking distance are the Hotel Indigo, which has rooms at $110 a night, the Hilton Garden Inn with rooms starting at $84 a night, and Springhill Suites by Marriott at $106 a night. There are also lots of AirBnb’s in the area, but watch out for football weekends as all lodging can get very expensive!

There are plenty of fun things to do in Athens aside from football games (which is still a fun experience). Catch a show at the Georgia Theatre, The Foundry, 40 Watt, or Live Wire! The B-52’s and REM got their start in Athens, so music is a big deal here. You’ll catch local artists and even bigger bands like Modest Mouse, Cold War Kids, Run the Jewels, or Mayday Parade playing in Athens.

Be sure to sample some of the amazing food and drinks in Athens like Cali N’ Titos, a Cuban restaurant, Mama’s Boy, our local’s favorite brunch spot with stellar biscuit sandwiches, and the Rook and Pawn, a board game café where the food will keep you there just as much as the extensive game collection! Lastly, don’t forget to try one of Athens’ craft breweries, such as Creature Comforts.

Asheville, North Carolina

Experienced by Megan at Red Around the World

Asheville Waterfall

Distance from Atlanta: 208 miles

Asheville, North Carolina is just under a 3.5-hour drive from Atlanta and the perfect weekend trip for outdoor and art lovers.  Whether you like cities or would rather be out on the trails, Asheville has tons of things to keep you busy.

West Asheville or downtown would be my recommendations on where to stay.  If you’re on more of a budget or just want to be a little out of the busiest area, West Asheville is perfect.  It has tons of amazing restaurants, coffee shops, and local stores without the downtown traffic.

If you want to be in the heart of things, downtown is great and also close to tons of amazing restaurants and shops.  Definitely check out Malaprops bookstore and go on a blind date with a book and the Asheville Bee Charmer for some delicious local honey goods.

Another must-see area in Asheville is the River Arts District which is packed with over 240 local artists!  Grab some souvenirs here and relax with a beer from a local brewery.

Tired of the city and want to get away a little bit?  Head over to the Blue Ridge Parkway and do some hikes!  Triple Falls (pictured) is just a short drive away and was a filming location for The Hunger Games!  Looking Glass Falls and Catawba Falls are two other great waterfalls to see and hikes to do while you’re here.  There is no bad time of year to visit Asheville, it will just depend on weather and foliage preferences.
