How to find cheap flights in the USA: 10+ Tips to Save Money on Flights!
1. Be Flexible with Your Travel Dates
Being flexible with your travel dates can significantly impact the cost of your flights. Try to avoid peak travel periods and consider flying on weekdays or during off-peak hours, as these times tend to have lower demand and lower prices.
Yes, I know this is easier said than done (thanks to 9-5’s), BUT even having the ability to flex your flight dates one or two days can save you some money.
2. Use Flight Aggregators and Comparison Sites
Utilize flight aggregators and comparison websites such as Google Flights, Cheap Flights, Skyscanner, Kayak, or Momondo.
These platforms gather flight information from multiple airlines and provide you with a comprehensive overview of available options and prices. Compare prices across different platforms to ensure you’re getting the best deal.
3. Be flexible with your location (Use the Explore Section of Google Flights)
More than once, I have selected the destination of a USA weekend trip based on finding the cheapest. By using the Explore section of Google Flights, you can select your home airport and dates and then search flight prices around the entire United States. Or, if you are extra flexible you can leave the date open as well!
By using this trick, I recently snatched $60 round trip flights to Denver and had the best weekend trip!
4. Set Fare Alerts
Many flight search engines and booking websites allow you to set fare alerts for specific routes and dates. By doing so, you’ll receive notifications when prices drop or when there are promotional offers for your desired destinations. This way, you can seize the opportunity to book at a lower fare.
4. Sign up for Airline Newsletters and Loyalty Programs
Subscribe to airline newsletters and loyalty programs to stay informed about exclusive deals, promotions, and flash sales. Airlines often offer discounted fares or special offers to their subscribers or frequent flyer.
In addition to specific airline’s newsletters, there are also many general flight deal clubs. I personally love the emails that come from GOING (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights). You can sign up for the free or paid plans and have deals from your home airport sent directly to your inbox. The paid plans start at just $50 per year and can save you thousands of dollars!
5. Be Open to Alternate Airports
Consider flying into or out of alternate airports near your desired destination. Sometimes, smaller airports or those located slightly farther away can offer cheaper fares due to lower operating costs or less congestion. Be sure to factor in transportation costs and travel time when considering this option.
When I travel home (back to Wisconsin). I almost always fly into the larger airport 2.5 hours away and take a $50 dollar shuttle to Duluth. I typically save A LOT of money doing it this way and it only takes me a little longer.
6. Opt for Budget Airlines
Look for budget airlines that operate within the USA, such as Spirit Airlines, or Frontier Airlines. These carriers often offer competitive prices, especially for shorter domestic flights. However, be aware of additional fees for services like checked baggage or seat selection, as they might affect the overall cost. Make sure you can pack everything you need in a personal item 🙂
I’ve flown alll over using budget airlines and have had very little issues.
Side note: Frontier has recently been a stickler about bag sizes so make sure to measure your bag before flying. Andddd don’t be afraid of wearing an extra layer or two!
7. Clear Browser Cookies or Use Incognito Mode
Some travel websites track your browsing history and may increase prices based on your search behavior. Clear your browser cookies or use the private or incognito mode when searching for flights to avoid potential price hikes.
I’m still not sure if this is 100 percent true, but I still do it every single time I search for flights (Especially last minute flights that I’m not planning on tracking).
8. Consider Connecting Flights
Direct flights are often more convenient, but they can also be more expensive. Look for flights with layovers or connecting flights, as they are often cheaper. Just ensure that the layover times are reasonable and allow for smooth connections.
Full transparency: This is probably my least favorite tip on the list as it can be riskier than a direct flight. BUT, if you are on a tight budget, it may be worth it.
9. Book in Advance
While last-minute deals can occasionally be found, it’s generally advisable to book your flights in advance. Airlines tend to increase prices as the departure date approaches, especially during peak travel seasons. Aim to book your flights at least a few weeks ahead of time to secure better prices.
10. Be Open to Flight Combinations
Sometimes, booking separate one-way tickets or combining flights from different airlines can result in cheaper fares. Don’t limit yourself to round-trip options or single airlines—explore various combinations to find the most cost-effective solution.
Remember, finding cheap flights in the USA may require some flexibility and patience. Keep an eye out for promotions, compare prices diligently, and be willing to adjust your travel plans to take advantage of the best deals available. Happy travels!
