Isak Heartstone (the troll has a name, of course) stands at over 15 feet tall and was built by artist Thomas Dambo using recycled wood. The troll appears to be emerging from the earth, offering a magical and slightly mischievous presence tucked away in the woods.
Isak Heartstone is relatively new, having been built in 2018. In just 7 short years, it has become one of Breckenridge’s most visited attractions!
The Breckenridge Troll is just one of many trolls Thomas has built and is one of two trolls in Colorado. Troll hunters can find Rita the Rock Planter just 93 miles away in Victor, Colorado.
Isak has a bit of a troubled past; you wouldn’t know it, but Isak originally was located in the Wellington Neighborhood in Breckenridge.
Isak caused too much of a stir with upwards of 3,000 visitors daily in the peak season. This caused an uproar in the (once quiet) neighborhood, and Isak was officially evicted. Rumor has it, the mayor of Breckenridge is a bit of a Grinch and tripped on Isak’s foot and therefore encouraged the eviction… but we don’t know the full story…. 🙂
Thankfully, the strong will of Isak and 3 young girls managed to keep his spirit alive. Isak was relocated to a wooded area (in 2019) just north of the Stephen C. West Ice Arena.

Although there isn’t an exact address, getting to the Breckenridge troll is pretty simple. The Trollstigen trailhead is located just a 15-minute walk away from the Breckenridge Welcome Center. You can reach the trailhead via car, on foot, by bike, or by the free Breck shuttle. Just type “Isak Heartstone” into your maps!
There are limited parking spots available at the trailhead. Troll visitors are not allowed to park in the ice rink’s lot, but should look for the spots marked with a troll sign. These spots do fill up QUICKLY during peak season and weekends.
If you are unable to find a spot, I HIGHLY recommend parking in the South Gondola Lot (.50 cents per hour) and the F Lot (3 dollars per hour and free after 3 pm) and then hopping on the free shuttle to the trail.

After arriving at the trailhead, Isak himself can be found at the end of a short 450ft trail.
The trail is well-maintained in the summer months, so it’s accessible for all ages and hiking abilities! However, it’s not maintained in the winter months (although it’s still open), so just be sure you are prepared, as it will likely be slippery!
Strollers and most wheelchairs should have no issues on the short trek. It is important to note that the trail was not constructed up to ADA standards, so you should proceed with caution, as there is one 6-inch step that may require assistance.
After checking out the troll, you’ll continue around the loop (one-way traffic) to complete the short loop.

Troll scavenger hunt anyone?! Isak isn’t the only magical troll. There are Over 40 Trolls in the United States Created by Thomas Dambo.
YES! A visit to Isak Heartstone is a must when visiting Breckenridge. No trip is complete without a quick visit and photo op with Isak. Every season offers a different experience and backdrop so don’t be afraid to visit it multiple times.
