Epic Denver Day Hikes

Whether you’re into gorgeous views, looking for wildlife, or maybe just needing an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city — one of these hikes is bound to pique your interest. While these hikes are in no particular order, I definitely have a few favorites! Keep reading to see!

1. Manitou Springs Incline

Manitou Springs Incline, Colorado
  • Parking: Hiawatha Gardens Parking Lot, located at 10 Old Man’s Trail or the Iron Springs Chateau, located at 444 Ruxton Ave.
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Length: 4 miles
  • Distance from Denver: 1 hr 18 mins

My boyfriend and I recently took on the challenge of the Manitou Springs Incline — and let me tell you, it was no joke!

This was a steep, heart-pumping hike up a former railway track. While the climb was intense, the views at at the top made it all worthwhile. This hike took us around 3.5 hours roundtrip, but I felt like it flew by because we came prepared with plenty of protein-rich snacks, water bottles, and sunscreen.

Good to know: This hike does require reservations, so be sure to book your spot early! We parked downtown and hopped on the free Rt. 33 shuttle. Start this hike early to beat the summer sun!

2. Mesa Top and Cottonwood Canyon Loop

  • Parking: Golden Open Space Trailhead off Salvia St.
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Length: 4.2 miles
  • Distance from Denver: 20 minutes

Hiking Mesa Top and Cottonwood Canyon Loop was so fun! Definitely a moderate hike that will give you a great workout and the chance to spot some cute wildlife along the way. I managed to see a couple of deer and rabbits along my travels.

The loop is about 4.2 miles long, so I would plan this day trip to take a few hours so you can fully enjoy the scenery and take breaks as needed! I went at around 9:00 am on a Sunday and there weren’t too many cars in the parking lot yet! This is a hike that does not offer much shade so definitely be prepared with sunscreen and water!

Good to Know: This is a VERY popular spot for mountain bikers, so be prepared to share the trail! I would say it’s best to start your hike clockwise since most mountain bikers go counterclockwise.

3. Clear Creek Trail

Clear Creak Trail, Colorado- best day hikes near Denver.
  • Parking: 304 10th St, Golden, CO 80401
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Length: 19.1 miles
  • Distance from Denver: 22 minutes

My boyfriend and I loved the Clear Creek Trail! You get a good view of wildlife and can do some people-watching tubing along the creek!

While we were hiking we even encountered a few rattlesnakes winding through the trail as well as plenty of birds. Keep in mind this paved trail is pretty popular, so you’ll more than likely be sharing the road with bikers and runners!

Good to know: The trail is mostly flat and accessible, making it suitable for all fitness levels and even strollers, plus you can bring your dogs!

4. Paint Mines Trail

  • Parking: Turn east on Paint Mines Road and look for the designated parking area
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Length: 3.4 miles
  • Distance from Denver: 1 hr 30 mins

This was definitely one of the most unique hiking experiences I’ve had so far in Colorado! The Paint Mines Trail was like stepping into a painting — seriously!

The vibrant rock formations create a palette of colors that were SO COOL. It’s a short, family-friendly hike with plenty of opportunities for amazing photos that took me around 1.5 hours to complete.

Since this is such a family-friendly hike, I would recommend getting there pretty early, and there is ZERO SHADE cover so bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water!

5. Devils Head Fire Lookout

  • Parking: 6500 S Rampart Range Rd, Sedalia, CO 80135
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Length: 2.8 miles
  • Distance from Denver: 1 hr 16 mins

Hiking up to the Devil’s Head Fire Lookout was an incredible experience! There’s nothing quite like taking in the panoramic views of the plains and mountains.

The hike is about a 2.8-mile round trip and includes a climb of 143 steps to the lookout tower, so wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for some serious elevation!

My boyfriend and I got there at around 7:45 am on a Saturday and the parking lot was about half full, by the time we left at around 9:30 am it was nearly full. So, plan to arrive early to beat the rush!

6. Garden of the Gods Observation Trail

Garden of the Gods, Colorado
  • Parking: Gateway Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80904
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Length: 0.5 miles
  • Distance from Denver: 1 hr 8 mins

My friend and I did a loop around the Garden of the Gods Observation Trail and it was amazing!

The towering red rock formations and panoramic views create a stunning backdrop that’s perfect for a relaxing walk. If you prefer to not walk, you can always drive through the red rock formations as well (perfect for some winter fun!)

Though the trail is relatively short and easy, it is perfect for all ages and abilities, with plenty of photo opportunities along the way as well! Something you can’t miss if you find yourself in Colorado Springs!

7. Rattlesnake Hill Trail

  • Parking: Rattlesnake Hill Trail, Henderson, CO 80640
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Length: 0.4 miles
  • Distance from Denver: 30 minutes

Just because this is a shorter “hike” doesn’t make it any less impressive!

Rattlesnake Hill Trail is an easy hike that’s great for enjoying the natural beauty of nature and seeing some wildlife such as bison and songbirds! But the show stopper is really the amazing views.

On clear days, you’ll be able to see some pretty amazing views of the Denver skyline against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains!

Good to know: This trail is wheelchair accessible, but you’ll have to leave your pups at home!

8. Bluffs Regional Park and Trail

Bluffs Regional Park Trail, Colorado
  • Parking: 10099 Crooked Stick Trail, Lone Tree, CO 80124
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Length: 2.7 miles
  • Distance from Denver: 25 minutes

Bluffs Regional Park and Trail is a gem! I enjoyed hiking through the rolling hills and along rocky bluffs, getting to the top to see the Denver skyline and surrounding towns, and spotting some blooming wildflowers along the way.

This is a great spot for a day of hiking, picnicking (they have plenty of picnic benches at the trailhead!), and soaking in the beautiful scenery. Or if you’re a Denver or surrounding city local, a good hiking trail to take to decompress after work.

Even though this trail is about 2.7 miles long — it has some steep sections, so be ready for a moderate workout and bring plenty of water!
