Fair warning… it’s a long one. BUT it’s truly the best list of outdoor clothing brands for women FROM WOMEN who have actually tested them in the outdoors!
1. Vessi

They now have rain jackets, gloves and hats that are equally as amazing. My personal favorite product are the Weekend Chelsea boots!
2. WoolX
WoolX is a brand that has mastered the art of blending fashion with functionality in outdoor apparel for women. Specializing in merino wool clothing, WoolX creates garments that are not only stylish but also offer exceptional comfort and performance.
Merino wool’s natural properties make WoolX products moisture-wicking, breathable, and odor-resistant, making them ideal for a range of outdoor activities. From base layers to outerwear, WoolX is synonymous with high-quality, versatile pieces that cater to the needs of women who appreciate both style and technical excellence in their outdoor wardrobe.

Keen’s women’s shoes often feature rugged outsoles for traction, supportive midsoles, and protective toe caps, making them a reliable choice for those who embrace an active lifestyle and demand footwear that can keep up with their outdoor endeavors.
My go-to Keen shoe is the women’s whisper sandal. I’m a weirdo and hate wearing socks, so these allow my toes to be protected while still giving me the comfort and support I need on short day hikes. I also love that I can cross rivers and wade in lakes with them!
4. Kuhl
Kuhl is a brand that seamlessly combines style and performance in outdoor clothing for women. Known for its rugged yet chic designs, Kuhl offers a range of apparel suitable for diverse outdoor activities.
Whether it’s hiking, camping, or simply exploring the outdoors, Kuhl’s attention to detail in design and functionality shines through.

5. Rab
Rab is a British mountaineering clothing brand specializing in technical apparel for both men and women. They are best known for their insulated jackets, which are some of the most packable, durable, functional, and warmest puffers on the market.
In particular, the Women’s Microlight Alpine Down Jacket is the ultimate multipurpose down jacket for women, with features such as internally elasticated cuffs, an adjustable hood and 700-fill power down, which elevates it above its competitors.
Rab’s cold-weather accessories, such as baselayers, headbands and down slippers, are also exceptionally warm and high-quality and make excellent gifts for adventurous women.
On top of their quality gear, Rab is also a certified Climate Neutral Company, works with several grassroots organizations, and is an active supporter of women’s outdoor initiatives.

6. Helly Hansen
Helly Hansen has been providing outdoor clothing for sailing, skiing, and hiking since 1877. My favorite Helly Hansen item is their Women’s Pier 3.0 Coastal Sailing Jacket.
Living on our boat and sailing full-time, this is my go-to jacket for wind, rain, and comfort too. It keeps me warm from strong winds and dry from foul weather as it is fully waterproof and windproof. I also like the bright red and yellow. It makes it easy to see me while out anchoring the boat in inclement weather and taking our dog to shore in the dinghy.

8. Trespass
Trespass brand was founded in 1938 in the vibrant city of Glasgow. Formerly known as Jacobs & Turner Ltd this small company was supplying huge local organizations in Scotland. 9. Alder Apparel
Alder Apparel is a female founded and led outdoor clothing company based out of Toronto Canada. Many outdoor companies focus on creating gear for “hardcore” or expert level outdoor activities, however, Alder believes that the outdoor industry should focus on fun being outside, whatever that looks like.
That’s not to say that the brand doesn’t deliver in terms of performance and function. I own numerous pieces and have worn the gear in all kinds of weather.
I have worn Alder Apparel clothing in the hottest of hot through the desert, travelling through Hawaii, in the rain visiting waterfalls of the PNW, and in the Canadian Rockies in winter.
The brand is size inclusive offering options from XS to 6X. Sustainability is a value that drives decision making at Alder. All fabrics are sustainable, with ethical manufacturing and factories. My personal favorites are the hiking shorts and the Go explore pants!

10. Patagonia
Patagonia is probably best known for two things – its distinct label and for being expensive, with the nickname “Pata-Gucci” being common amongst those who wear it.
In 2022, the company decided to reinvest all profits as a dividend to help fight the climate change crisis, so you can spend with a clean conscious.
Patagonia sells a wide range of outdoor gear: fleece sweaters, down jackets, shorts, t-shirts, mitts, and beanies. If you can wear it, they probably sell it.
My favorite item is the Women’s Better Sweater ¼ – Zip Fleece. It’s warm, lightweight and looks really great. I’ve worn it consistently for the past 6 years, yet it still looks brand new.
I first wore it on the Heaphy Track in New Zealand and now wouldn’t consider going on a hike without it.

11. Icebreaker
Icebreaker is a New Zealand company that specializes in Merino wool products. It’s also a socially conscious company that follows sustainable principles, environmental stewardship and animal welfare.
They make a wide variety of Merino wool items, including base layers, mid layers, outerwear, socks, underwear and accessories, all of which are made from natural fibers.
Merino wool is the superhero of fabrics: it’s odor-resistant, quick-drying, wrinkle-resistant, and it thermoregulates. This means it keeps you warm in cold conditions and cool in warm conditions.
Due to Merino wool’s incredible properties, Icebreaker clothing is excellent for both travel and outdoor adventures. Whether I’m hiking Fish River Canyon in Namibia or sitting on an air-conditioned bus in Thailand, I have a couple of Icebreaker products in my bag.
My personal favorites are the 260 Tech Long Sleeve Half Zip Thermal Top and the Tech Lite II Short Sleeve T-Shirt. It’s a great outdoors brand when searching for the best gear for women!

They’ve got everything from outdoor gear like hammocks and blankets to various apparel, all with a focus on sustainability and using recycled materials. Coalatree’s standout feature is its ability to produce durable yet powerfully water-repellent and wind-proof clothing.
While I initially discovered them for their versatile picnic blanket that also serves as a waterproof poncho, my favorite product is their popular Trailhead Pants. These pants are as flexible as yoga leggings, completely waterproof, and still have a trendy enough appeal for urban settings.

From their signature jackets to backpacks, climbing gear, and footwear, Arcteryx has everything you need for your outdoor adventures. Their attention to detail and focus on functionality ensure their products are built to last.
My favorite item from Arcteryx is their Beta AR Jacket, a staple in my travel bag since 2016 and with no degradation in quality despite my heavy use. I’ve taken this piece touring Yellowstone in the harsh winter to summiting freezing volcanos, and only the strongest of rain and wind can penetrate this ultra-lightweight shell.

14. My Urban Trail
My Urban Trail is an outdoors clothing brand that strives to empower women to get moving and enjoy the great outdoors in clothing that’s stylish and flattering. They want to get away from boring outdoor wear so women can feel fabulous outdoors in their range.
My favorite items are their leopard-print leggings that are designed to be super flexible for hiking, scrambling and exercising, and that look great too. They’re high waisted and even have a handy pocket for your phone.
The brand was founded during the Coronavirus pandemic by Laura who found a new love for the outdoors as she searched for escapism. Laura has since created an outdoor community, organizing regular group walks and focusing on accessibility.

Goodr sunglasses have combined fashion with function. They come in a variety of colors, so you can color coordinate with your outfits, and come in different frame styles to match your face like square, round, aviator, and sporty.
My personal favorite is Flamingos on a Booze Cruise, aka hot pink.
The frames are made with a non-slip material, specifically made for runners but also perfect for when you’re sweaty while hiking across lava at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park .
Their customer service is unmatched with a 30-day moneyback guarantee and 1 year warranty; for reals. I had an issue with one pair and they sent me a new one without any qualms.
Goodr sunglasses are a 100% carbon neutral company and they support the National Park Foundation with their National Park themed glasses.

Cotopaxi crafts outdoor clothing that not only withstand the elements but also make a positive environmental and social impact. Their products are produced in Latin America under fair conditions and many products are made from recycled, repurposed, or responsible materials.
They sell various sports and outdoor clothes, from T-shirts and shorts to thick hoodies and raincoats, as well as backpacks. All their items come in a unique color pattern.
My favorite pieces of clothing from Cotopaxi are my fleece jacket and my rain jacket. They were a lifesaver during my summer holiday to New Zealand, where it rained almost every day and it was colder than expected. Since then, my rain jacket has become one of the minimalist travel essentials I bring on every trip.

Aside from their products being incredibly versatile and durable, they are also often made using eco-friendly materials and the brand makes serious efforts to reduce their carbon emissions.
My favorite piece of their collection is the Runbold zip-off pants. It is suitable for various climates and I’ve worn it while climbing mountain peaks in Nong Khiaw in Laos, hiking Cat Ba National Park in Vietnam, and watching orangutans in Borneo.

19. Lululemon
One of the best women’s outdoor clothing brands is Lululemon. Although the company started in Canada, its utilitarian tech fabrics led to its global popularity. One of the best attributes of the Lululemon brand is their commitment to equal gender pay, diversity and size inclusivity.
Although the company’s core principles are important, the fit and performance of its clothing is paramount. Their products are functional for all kinds of outdoor activities including yoga, running, hiking, tennis, and travel. From pants, shorts, shirts, tank tops, jackets and accessories- Lululemon has it all.
Some best selling Lululemon outdoor items include their Scuba hoodie jacket, Align leggings and Sculpt tank. Although items can be pricey, the quality of Lululemon means their clothing can stand up to your toughest workouts.

21. Merrell
A outdoor activewear brand that I love for outdoor shoes is Merrell, which was founded in 1981 in the US as a maker of high-performance hiking boots. Merrell shoes receive great reviews for their performance, comfort and durability. While best known for footwear, they also sell some outdoor clothing and accessories.
My favorite item are my Merrell Women’s Moab 2 Mid Waterproof hiking boots. I wore them in Iceland as I needed hiking boots that would keep my feet dry with good traction when it was raining or when hiking in the mud and slippery terrain. Not only did these hiking shoes meet my high standards, they were comfortable right out of the box and did not need to be broken in at all.

22. Mountain Hardware
When it comes to well-fitting, colorful and stylish outdoor clothing for women, Mountain Hardware’s impressive selection of insulated jackets, pants and ski shell jackets is tough to beat. Their collection of light, casual women’s outdoor gear is perfect for summer activities.
But Mountain Hardware really shines when the snow starts flying and the temperature dips. I love layering their Kor Statis Hoodie, designed to be used during high output activities in cold temperatures, with their Stretch Ozonic Insulated Jacket for cold weather trail hikes and urban dog walks.
The 100% recycled waterproof shell fabric of the Ozonic Jacket keeps frequent Vancouver rains at bay, while its stretch lining moves with me on the ski slopes of Whistler or Park City.

23. REI Co-Op Brand
REI’s in-house Co-Op brand offers a diversity of outdoor clothing items for women. Most of their products are certified Fair Trade, and they tend to be more affordable than comparable products from other outdoor brands.
In addition, REI has generous return policies that make it easy to try out an item and get your money back if it doesn’t work out for you. REI brand shorts and leggings are always at the top of my packing list for vacations when I plan to hike.
On my recent trip to Oahu, I hiked the iconic Lanikai Pillbox Trail and was so glad I had my REI yoga shorts, which have deep pockets so I don’t have to carry a backpack in the heat.
REI Co-op definitely deserves a spot on this best of women’s outdoor gear list!

Minus33 makes quality wool clothing at an affordable price. Their pieces are great for anyone new to the outdoors as well as seasoned pros. You’ll find everything from wool underwear to base layers to mid-layers to socks in a variety of different weights.

25. Kathmandu
Specializing in clothing and equipment gear for travel and outdoors, Kathmandu is a New Zealand (NZ) and Australian (Aus) brand. Founded in the 1980s, the brand focuses on eco-friendly and sustainable products.
Even though the first retail stores were opened in NZ and Aus, they are now a global brand with stores in many countries like the US and the UK. It’s one of the best brands for outdoor gear for women.
Being an avid hiker and traveler, my most trusted brand is Kathmandu and have purchased plenty of products, including backpacks and trekking shoes. One of my favorite products is the Kathmandu Heli R Down and Hooded Jacket as it was perfect for most of the cold places I have visited so far such as Tbilisi in Georgia during the winter season.

26. Eddie Bauer
Our entire family loves the Eddie Bauer brand of outdoor clothing. From down-filled vests, soft warm fleeces, and puffy jackets to the long underwear- Eddie Bauer is the way to go!
When we moved from Florida to Colorado we were so ill-prepared for the intense cold we would experience exploring the mountain towns of Vail and Breckenridge, and on family hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park.
When we started searching for warmer clothes, we found other brands were more costly and that we were paying more just for the name. Once we stocked up at the Eddie Bauer store, we were so much more comfortable and toasty warm! I won’t go anywhere in the winter without my packable down jacket, and my long down puffy coat has kept me warm on so many ski slopes.

With the slogan “Sport for All. All for Sport,” Decathlon has been active for over 40 years, now operating over 1,100 stores in more than 30 countries. Their expansion into North America, with stores in cities like Montreal, Boston, New York, and San Francisco, brings their unique blend of REI quality and Walmart prices to a wider audience.

28. Fjallraven
Made popular with its durable bags and excellent winter clothing, Fjallraven is one of the outdoor clothing best brands for travelers.
Fjallraven is a brand that is eco-conscious, high-quality, and durable.
The brand itself caters to everyone, including kids. They have a huge selection of durable clothing, bags, and additional travel essentials.
Most importantly, all of their items are built to last. They have a section on their website all about how to take care of and repair their items so that you do not have to purchase more.
I love the Fjallraven Nuuk Parka, which I added to my NYC winter packing list. It is sustainably made with synthetic insulation and incredibly warm.

29. Saucony
Saucony is a very renowned running shoe brand, but what really stands out, if you like hiking and trekking, are their trail running shoes. The shoes, manufactured in the US, are extremely comfortable, flexible, and have a very good grip, which makes them great for long hikes.
Additionally, typical hiking shoes often come with Gore-Tex , a waterproof material that prevents your feet from getting wet if it rains, but that material makes the shoes stiff, leading many people to find them uncomfortable for long hikes. On the contrary, many Saucony trail shoes are made from breathable fabric that can let water in but dries super fast.
Whenever I go hiking in the mountains of Huaraz, Peru, they are my to-go shoes. I have also hiked more than a month in the Camino de Santiago in Spain with them, and didn’t get even one blister.
Recommended by Sharon of I Travel Peru
30. Altra Running
The Altra Running brand offers hiking shoes designed for beginners, with a focus on providing a wide toe box for orthopedic comfort. As a physical therapist, I’m always searching for footwear that won’t cause issues, and the Altra Lone Peak 7 series could be an excellent choice for you.
These shoes are unique with their zero-drop heel to toe dimensions. However, it’s important to note that transitioning to this type of shoe may require some break-in time, so it’s not a good idea to just jump into them.
The company’s founders are former cross country runners from Utah, so they really know their stuff when it comes to running and hiking. Even though Altra is a newer company, having been around for about 10 years, I hope they continue creating these alternative style shoes for those of us seeking durability for running and hiking. You can find their shoes online at their storefront or at REI.

31. Peak Design
As a full-time travel blogger, I believe Peak Design is one of the ultimate tech and outdoor accessory brands for women.
Their range of bags, spanning from small fanny packs to travel luggage, are all great.
What sets Peak Design apart is its specialization in tech-related wearables, offering travel bags equipped with customizable compartments for cameras, laptops, and drones.
My Peak Design 20L backpack has been my constant companion for the past three years, accompanying me both through city trips to NYC and on more intrepid travels to places like the Komodo Islands in Indonesia.
All Peak Design products have a lifetime warranty which I used when one of my bag straps failed and they mailed me a new one from the USA to Peru.
Peak Design seamlessly merges durability, versatility, and style in travel accessories, and is a perfect brand for women adventure-travelers.
