Map of Things to do In Idaho Springs
The town itself has a population of just under 2,000. BUT, don’t let its size fool you…look at all the adventures within 30 miles!
31 Things to do in Idaho Springs
1. Soak at Indian Hot Springs
Nestled amidst the breathtaking beauty of Clear Creek Canyon in Idaho Springs, Colorado, the Indian Hot Springs Resort offers a tranquil escape for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.
This rustic yet charming resort is renowned for its natural mineral hot springs, which have been drawing visitors for over a century (yep 100+ years!). With geothermal pools of varying temperatures and a serene mountain backdrop, it’s a haven for anyone in search of a soothing getaway from Denver!
Be sure to combine your soak with a visit to the Mud Room! The whole-body mud mask if a great way to relax and exfoliate after a weekend of hiking (It was 10000 percent needed after conquering Grays Peak– a nearby 14er!
2. Check out St. Mary’s Glacier
The hike to St. Mary’s Glacier was actually the first on my list when researching things to do in Idaho Springs. It was beautiful, however it’s the most popular hike in the area so be prepared to share the trail!
You do have to park in private lots, so there is a fee. We parked in the first lot we saw which was $20 (easy to pay via phone and credit card), but then we saw additional lots (past the trailhead) for $10. The lots were pretty big, but they do still fill up on weekends and holidays.
The hike to the lake is a easy .8 mile trip (1.6-mile round trip) that follows a well-maintained uphill trail. After arriving at the lake, there’s plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the views. You can also hike up to the glacier for a better view of the lake and the glacier!
3. Drive to the top of Mount Evans
If hiking is not your thing, you can still check out the views from 14,000 feet at the top of Mount Evans. It’s actually home to the highest paved road in all of North America! The entire drive from Idaho Springs to the top is 49 miles and will take you around 2 hours (each way). The byway is only open in the summer months and does require advance reservations.
4. Stay in a (or hike to) Fire Tower
Just 19 miles from downtown, you’ll find the Mestaa’Ehehe Mountain Fire Lookout trail. This 4.1-mile hike gains 862 ft as you ascend on a gravel service road. If you have a jeep or high clearance car, you are able to drive 2 miles up the road up to the gate.
The trail itself isn’t the most exciting, the views at the top make up for it. Although, you can not go into the Fire Tower (it gets rented out) you can hike to the left of it for epic views.
Side note: You can reserve the fire tower for an epic night off-the-grid.
5. Hike a 14er
Is hiking a 14er on your bucket list?! Grays Peak near Idaho Springs is a great Colorado 14er for first-timers, BUT it’s important to still be prepared.
Although this Colorado hike is under 10 miles, do not let the short distance fool you. It’s a challenge (learn from my mistakes here!). From the parking lot to the peak (and back), it’s only about 7.3 miles. But, during the 3.6-mile climb up, you’ll gain over 3,000 ft and end at over 14,000 feet.
The trail is easy to follow and no technical climbing is involved, but you may notice some signs of altitude sickness as you hike.
If you are up for it (I was not…), you can continue your hike to Torreys Peak. Yep, that means you’ll be able to bag two 14ers in one day (It adds about another mile and 500+ feet of elevation to your trek).
It’s a must on any Things to do in Idaho Springs list…especially for adventure-lovers!

After a day of adventuring, satisfy your hunger with a famous “Colorado Mountain Pie” at BeauJo’s. This local pizzeria is famous for its unique thick crust and fresh toppings, offering a tasty twist on traditional pizza.
To be completely honest, I was still miserable from the altitude on the Gray’s Peak hike to fully enjoy the pizza BUT it was still tasty the next day 🙂

Cast your line into the pristine waters of nearby rivers and lakes for a memorable fishing experience. Idaho Springs is an angler’s paradise, with plenty of opportunities to catch trout and other mountain fish.
