Who woulda thunk there are so many outdoorsy and adventurous things to do near Las Vegas?! And you guys know I looooove a good weekend trip. Las Vegas makes for an easy (and typically inexpensive) airport to fly into.
I’ve sorted these weekend trips from Las Vegas from shortest to longest distance (all under 5 hours!)
1. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Nevada
- Mileage from Las Vegas: About 20 miles
- Possible Stay: Mandalay (on the strip for the best of both worlds)
Known for its stunning red rock formations and scenic drives, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is an extremely close weekend trip from Las Vegas. Just 20 miles from the airport, you’ll find opportunities for hiking, biking, and rock climbing. Local guides provide tours onsite and right from the Las Vegas strip.
For a more relaxed experience, the 13-mile scenic drive provides breathtaking views of the red rock formations. It’s important to note that you do need timed reservations if visiting between October 1 and May 31.

2. Mt. Charleston, Nevada

Escape the desert heat and explore forested hiking trails. There’s over 60 miles of trails to explore with most starting at over 6,000 feet! If you are up for a major adventure, try hiking to Charleston Peak where you will gain almost 5,000 feet in elevation!
In winter, it’s a popular spot for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding. Then, cozy up in a mountain lodge after a day of adventure.
3. Willow Beach, Arizona

Willow Beach is the perfect weekend getaway from Las Vegas for water lovers. At less than 1 hour away, you’ll be at the shores of the Colorado River. The most popular thing to do here is to kayak to the famous Emerald Cave! You can reach this natural wonder by renting a kayak or partaking in a guided tour. We did a tour and absolutely loved it!
After kayaking, make sure to save some time to explore more of the Lake Mead Recreation Area. The Arizona Hot Springs hike is a must!

4. Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

Famed for its red sandstone formations, Valley of Fire is one of my favorite state parks I’ve ever visited. Immediately after entering, you will feel as though you’ve landed on another planet.
Highlights include hiking the Fire Wave, the North Dome Trail, and checking out ancient petroglyphs. You could easily spend and entire weekend exploring all the park has to offer. A sunset helicopter ride or adventurous ATV tour would add to the excitement!
5. Death Valley, California

Known for its extreme landscapes and holding the record of the hottest place on earth, Death Valley is a place of stark beauty. During this adventurous weekend trip from Las Vegas, you can visit iconic spots like Badwater Basin, Zabriske Point, and the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.
I recommend grabbing a room at one of the lodges at sight so you can make the most of your getaway. The park is HUGE, so you’ll appreciate the extra time.

A trip to the Mojave Desert is a relaxing weekend getaway from Las Vegas away from the hustle and bustle. The best times to visit are during the cooler months of late fall to early spring, as summer temperatures can be extremely high.
I highly recommend renting or bringing a 4WD car here as there are miles of off-the-beaten track roads to explore. You can also go biking, hiking, or horseback riding to explore the diverse landscape. Make sure to save time in your weekend to check out the Kelso Sand Dunes!

Don’t miss the annual Utah Shakespeare Festival if you’re visiting from June to October. The Lava River Cave, a mile-long lava tube, provides a cool and unusual hiking experience.

Flagstaff’s higher elevation means it’s cooler than much of Arizona, so packing layers is advisable. This is a great weekend trip from Las Vegas if you are searching for a some colder weather.

Prescott, Arizona, nestled in the Bradshaw Mountains, is an enchanting destination for a weekend getaway near Vegas. For outdoor enthusiasts, the area boasts over 400 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails, with the Prescott National Forest and the scenic Watson and Lynx Lakes providing stunning backdrops for these activities. Although you could book a guided day trip right from Las Vegas to Bryce, I highly recommend spending a weekend exploring this magical National Park.
Bryce is especially unique as it’s known for its otherworldly landscapes and unique geological formations. The park is renowned for its hoodoos, spire-shaped rock formations created by frost weathering and stream erosion.
Hiking is the most popular activity, with trails ranging from easy walks like the Rim Trail, offering stunning vistas of the amphitheater, to more challenging hikes such as the Fairyland Loop (my personal favorite).
Sunrise and sunset are magical times to view the hoodoos as they glow in the changing light. For a unique experience, consider a night sky program; Bryce Canyon is known for its exceptionally dark skies, making it a prime spot for stargazing.
19. Los Angeles, California

For those wanting to hop from one vibrant city to the next, Los Angeles is a great pick for a city getaway from Vegas. LA offers an eclectic and exciting experience, showcasing the vast diversity and dynamic energy of one of America’s largest cities.
For those interested in the arts and culture, the city boasts world-class museums like The Getty Center and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). A weekend road trip from Las Vegas to Sedona, Arizona, is a mesmerizing experience and definitely ONE of my favs. Known for its stunning red rock formations and an atmosphere that many describe as spiritual and rejuvenating.
Outdoor activities are abundant in Sedona. Hiking is a popular choice with trails suitable for all skill levels, offering breathtaking views of the red rocks. Some of the most famous trails include Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Devil’s Bridge. My favorite was Boyton Canyon (pictured on the left above!)
Sedona is also well-known for its vortex sites, areas believed to be swirling centers of energy that are conducive to healing, meditation, and self-exploration.
For those interested in arts and culture, Sedona has a thriving arts scene with numerous galleries showcasing local and Native American art. The Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, designed in the style of a traditional Mexican village, is a delightful place for shopping and dining.

21. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

A visit to the Grand Canyon is an unforgettable experience. The park offers numerous viewpoints like Mather Point and Bright Angel Point, providing stunning panoramic views of the canyon. There are countless ways to experience the Grand Canyon. The South Rim, open year-round, offers spectacular views and is the most accessible part of the park. The star attraction near Page is Antelope Canyon, a stunning slot canyon known for its wave-like structure and the light beams that shine down into the openings of the canyon, creating a surreal and photogenic environment.
