Munising is one of those places that lives up to the hype! Tucked along the shores of Lake Superior, it’s the gateway to the stunning Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and a dream destination for anyone who loves waterfalls, boat rides, and time spent outdoors. I spent a few days in Marquette and made a day trip to check out all Munising has to offer, and honestly? I could’ve stayed all summer. Here are my favorite things to do in Munising, Michigan, plus a sample one-day Munising itinerary!

My mom and I were staying at the Best Western Plus in Marquette, which is less than one hour from Munising, so I knew we had to make the trip! If you are planning a day or weekend in this charming city, here are some of the very best things to do in Munising!
Unfortunately, when we visited, the road to and the trailhead to Munising Falls was still closed. However, if its open during your visit, it looks like a must stop. It’s one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the area! It’s a short, paved walk to a beautiful 50-foot waterfall surrounded by lush forest.

If you’re looking for a jaw-dropping view without a long hike, Miners Castle is your place. It’s one of the most iconic overlooks in the Pictured Rocks area, and the colors of the cliffs against the turquoise water are unreal. There’s a short trail you can walk for different views.
This is one of the more unique things you can do in the USA. The glass bottom boat lets you peek into Lake Superior to see actual shipwrecks, all while cruising along the scenic shoreline. It’s a fascinating blend of eerie history and natural beauty around you.
This particular tour lasts about 2 hours and takes you to two different shipwreck sites.

Hands down, this was the highlight of my trip. Kayaking beneath the towering, multicolored cliffs of Pictured Rocks feels like you’re in another world. I booked a 3-hour guided tour with Paddling Michigan, and while Lake Superior can be a bit moody, the guides know exactly how to keep things safe and fun.
And, we were lucky with the perfect hot and sunny day! If you’re up for an adventure, this is a must-do. There are many different options that will take you to different landmarks.
If you’re craving speed and spray, hop on the Riptide Ride. It’s a high-speed boat tour with spins, splashes, and stunning views of the cliffs from the water.

Miners Falls is a bit more off-the-beaten-path than Munising Falls, but just as gorgeous. It’s about a 1.2-mile round-trip hike through the woods, ending at a powerful waterfall that crashes down into a rocky gorge. It was one of my favorites during my time in the Upper Peninsula!
For those looking for a relaxing evening with great views, a dinner cruise is a must! Paddling Michigan has a fun dinner cruise that includes a complimentary dinner from The Dock Pond that you can bring aboard as you admire your surroundings!

This small but lovely waterfall is super close to town and easy to access. It’s a peaceful spot tucked in the woods and a great little detour if you’re waterfall-hopping your way around Munising (which, honestly, you should be).
For a more relaxed day on the water, rent a pontoon boat and cruise around Munising Bay. You’ll get views of the cliffs, waterfalls, and lighthouses at your own pace. Pack a cooler, bring a playlist, and make a full day of it.

Miners Beach is the perfect place to relax after a hike or tour. It’s a beautiful sandy stretch along Lake Superior with room to spread out and explore. I waded into the (very cold) water and watched kayakers paddle by while soaking up the sun. I want to plan a return trip and spend much more time on this beach! I could believe I was still in the Midwest!
If you’re ready for a longer adventure, the Chapel Loop is worth every step. It’s a 6.5-mile hike that takes you past waterfalls, through forest, and right along the edge of Pictured Rocks. The views are insane, especially Chapel Rock and Chapel Beach. Just make sure to pack snacks, water, and good shoes; it’s a long one!
Here’s exactly how we spent our one day in Munising! If you have more time, mix and match the above things to do!
Munising is a small town packed with big adventure. Whether you’re here for the waterfalls, the cliffs, or just a peaceful weekend by the lake, there’s something magical about this little slice of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. I left with a full camera roll, and a deep love for Lake Superior, and some of the best memories. I already can’t wait to come back.
