How do I get to Phoenix?
If you’re planning a weekend in Phoenix, getting into the city is easy. You will fly into the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, located just minutes from downtown Phoenix.
Once you arrive, renting a car may be your best option if you plan on exploring beyond the city limits. And I highly recommend doing so, because some of the best sights are hard to reach without a vehicle!
As for public transportation in the city, the Valley Metro bus system runs throughout Phoenix and the surrounding areas, as does the light rail system. The light rail is ideal for getting around downtown.
No matter what type of transportation you choose, there are plenty of ways to experience all the vibrant local culture that Phoenix has to offer.
What is the best time to visit Phoenix?
When planning your weekend trip, you’ll want to consider the best time of year to visit Phoenix.
The weather in Phoenix is hot and dry for much of the year, but the heat can be a bit more manageable in the cooler months of November through April. This period is typically considered peak season, with plenty of tourists flocking to the city to enjoy the pleasant temperatures.
If you’re looking to avoid crowds (and save some money), consider visiting during the off-season from May through October. While the temperature can soar to over 100 degrees, the lower prices and smaller crowds may be worth it for travelers on a budget. Be sure to do any strenuous activities early in the day, and enjoy shade and swimming pools in the afternoon.
Additionally, Phoenix hosts a number of yearly festivals and events, such as the Arizona State Fair in October and the McDowell Mountain Music Festival in March, which can make for a fun experience during your weekend in the city.
Where should I stay in Phoenix?
Booking.comPhoenix has many different neighborhoods to explore, so for first-timers, deciding where to stay can be tricky. Let’s weigh the pros and cons of different regions in Phoenix to help you make the best decision.
Downtown Phoenix offers a lively atmosphere with plenty of entertainment and nightlife. Those looking for trendy drink spots and loud nights should consider staying here.
If you’re looking for something outside of downtown, consider looking in Scottsdale or Tempe. Both areas are typically more budget-friendly but still have plenty of restaurants, attractions, and hiking trails nearby.
No matter which area you choose to stay, I suggest spending at least one day in Phoenix and one day exploring the farther corners, so you really get a feel for this amazing desert locale.

Sample 3-Day Phoenix Weekend Itinerary
Day 1 in Phoenix:
Morning:
Start your day with one of the best hikes in the region: the rugged Camelback Mountain. Just as the name suggests, the mountain appears to be shaped like a camel from afar. Remember to start your hike as early in the day as possible.
You will have two different trail options to choose from, both of which are challenging and require a decent level of fitness.
The Echo Canyon Trail is the shorter and steeper of the two hikes, clocking in at just under 2.5 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of 1,400 feet. The Cholla Trail, which is longer and less steep, is about 3 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of 1,200 feet.
No matter which trail you choose, expect rocky terrain and a bit of scrambling towards the top. But the panoramic views of Phoenix make it all worth the effort! Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and sunscreen, no matter when you visit.
Afternoon:
In the afternoon, I recommend enjoying an indoor activity, especially in the hot summer months. The Phoenix Art Museum and The Heard Museum are two excellent museum choices for art lovers and history buffs alike.
The Phoenix Art Museum features an impressive collection of American, Asian, European, and contemporary art. The exhibitions change throughout the year, so even locals never have the same experience twice.
The Heard Museum is dedicated entirely to Native American art and culture, with its collection of pottery, textiles, jewelry, and more. Visitors will learn about the traditions and stories of the indigenous peoples of Phoenix as well as farther out in the Southwest. The Heard is a great choice for history lovers.
Evening:
Spend your first evening downtown, exploring the quirky art murals of Roosevelt Row.
Roosevelt Row is an artistic community in downtown Phoenix full of boutique shops, unique eateries, and energetic live bands. But the true draw of the area lies in the colorful street art that lines the walls of this area.
From brightly painted murals on main streets to hidden artwork off the beaten path, you’ll encounter a variety of artists, themes, colors, and styles. Prepare to be wowed by the vibrant world of creativity on Roosevelt Road.
While out and about and marveling at the art, be sure to grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants.
Then, end the night at Pour Bastards nearby, where you can enjoy a refreshing twist on cocktails and natural wines.
Day 2 in Phoenix:
Morning:
Today, start your morning at the Japanese Friendship Garden, walking around the tranquil natural setting. It is a breathtaking oasis tucked away in the heart of Phoenix.
Designed to promote peacefulness and tranquility, visitors are transported into a world of serenity here as they stroll around a large pool of water. Traditional Japanese themes are on full display here with walking paths, stone arrangements, and even an onsite Tea House.
With cherry blossom trees and koi ponds, the Japanese Friendship Garden is a must-see attraction for both locals and visitors alike.
Afternoon:
Today you’ll head into the heart of Tempe and visit the Tempe Arts Center next to Tempe Town Lake.
This center houses an art gallery, a theatre, and exhibition halls inside of a beautifully constructed building. Enjoy the art, stay for a show, and walk the lakeside.
If you are looking for a more outdoorsy activity for the afternoon, book a kayaking day trip down the Lower Salt River.
Evening:
Tonight, you can explore Tempe’s loud and raucous Mill Avenue. This area is great for the college-aged crowd, as ASU students frequent the bars and shops on this street.
Or, if that is not your scene, drive over to Old Town Scottsdale for what is best described as a luxurious Wild West town. Trendy bars sit next to cowboy boot shops for an eclectic environment that so many visitor’s love.
Day 3 in Phoenix:
Morning:
For your last morning in Tempe, head over to Papago Park to explore some of the wild rock formations throughout the landscape. One of the best attributes of Phoenix is the rugged desert, and you will find that here.
In Papago’s natural area, you can simply sit and enjoy the views or take on a short hike. Then, head next door for brunch at either Gertrude’s or the Patio Cafe.
Both of these restaurants have delicious options that will cater to all diets. But, they are also conveniently housed in your next stop – the Phoenix Botanical Garden.
Afternoon:
Phoenix Botanical Garden is a true gem in the middle of the desert. It covers over 140 acres of land and features an impressive variety of plants from around the world. It will not surprise you that much of the grounds are covered in cacti!
Visitors can spend hours strolling through the garden’s ten different themed areas. Additionally, the garden features a variety of educational exhibits, like interactive displays on the ecosystem of the Sonoran Desert and the history of agriculture in the region.
The Phoenix Botanical Garden is a must-visit for any visitor during one weekend in Phoenix.
Evening:
I highly recommend spending your last sunset in Phoenix at the breathtaking Dobbins Lookout in South Mountain Park and Preserve. Towering over the Phoenix skyline at over 2,000 feet, this observation point offers unrivaled views of the sunset over the city.
To reach the viewpoint, you do not need to hike. In fact, since you will be leaving after sunset, I don’t recommend it in the evenings.
Instead, you’ll conveniently drive to the top of the mountain and park on site. You can relax in stone gazebo-like structures or simply find a nice rock outcropping to sit on as you gaze out into the distance.
