How do I get to Clearwater?
Flights into Tampa International Airport (TPA) are the most efficient way for visitors traveling a far distance to get to Clearwater. The Tampa airport is a 40-minute drive from Clearwater, so you will want to rent a car.
Having access to a vehicle will offer you great freedom in how you explore Clearwater and the surrounding areas as well.
What is the best time to visit Clearwater?
Clearwater is a wonderful vacation destination year-round. But if you’re looking to avoid the spring break crowds and the stifling summer heat, the autumn season is the prime time to visit.
Because many families have children back in school, tourism slows down significantly during this time. That slowdown brings more affordable flights and accommodations. And weather-wise, you couldn’t ask for more comfortable warm temperatures without such high humidity.
There are even some Jazz festivals and a Greek festival that takes place in Clearwater in the fall. It’s a super fun time to visit this wonderful town.
Where should I stay in Clearwater?
There are many different options for accommodations when spending time in Clearwater. There are two factors to keep in mind when deciding where to stay – location and budget.
Clearwater is home to some of the most fantastic family resorts. Most of these resorts are just a short walk from Clearwater Beach, while some of them even offer direct beach access. If you’re looking for a comfortable and convenient beach getaway, you can’t beat a setup like that. Keep in mind you will pay for the convenience in resort fees.
If you’re traveling on a budget or are interested in spending your time in Clearwater in a variety of locations (i.e., don’t require a close beach location), there are comfortable and more affordable hotel and motel options, just a short drive from Clearwater Beach.
My Clearwater Hotel Recommendations:
- Budget-friendly Option: Sea Jay Motel & Marina
This is a simple property that doesn’t offer any over-the-top features, but it’s a nice place to stay, especially for the reasonable rate. The rooms are clean, and air-conditioned, and feature a microwave and a dining table. They offer bicycle rentals too, which is a super fun way to explore the surrounding areas.
- Mid-range Option: Pier House 60 Clearwater Beach
This hotel couldn’t have a better location, as it’s right across the street from the beach. The location also allows for convenient access to the lively parts of the city, featuring street performers and other top-notch attractions.
Each room here features a Serta mattress and views of either the marina or the gulf. And if you’re hungry, you can easily grab a bite to eat at Jimmy’s Crow’s Nest rooftop bar, also on the property.
- Luxury Option: Sandpearl Resort Clearwater Beach
This resort is a perfect choice for families who are traveling to Clearwater for a real full-fledged beach vacation. The property here features two acres of prime beachfront, a heated pool along with comfortable cabanas, and a sauna for ultimate relaxation.
Families or other groups traveling together can throw their own barbecue on the recreation deck, stocked with grills and picnic areas to enjoy a meal together while taking in the Gulf of Mexico view.
- Dog-friendly Stay: Hollander Boutique Hotel
This hotel is a dream come true for canines and kitties. It has a great central location and a sophisticated yet whimsical design. The rooms offer top-notch comforts and the pet fees won’t break the bank.
Sample 3-Day Clearwater Weekend Itinerary
Day 1: Explore Clearwater Beach
Morning:
There’s no better way to kickstart your vacation than with a trip to Clearwater Beach. One of the top-rated beaches in the United States, the beautiful gulf waters are clear and surprisingly warm!
It’s a great place to hang out as a family, enjoying the sand, the sun and the waves! Whether you’re looking to relax in the sunshine or have an exciting day on the water, there’s so much fun to be had at Clearwater Beach.
Afternoon:
Not far from the beach, you’ll find Clearwater Marine Aquarium. If you’ve got any sea-life-loving people in your party, this is a must-visit attraction. It’s definitely a unique aquarium experience, as it’s also a marine life rescue. There are lots of different fish and exhibits to explore and enjoy.
Tip! Admission to the aquarium is included in the Tampa Bay City Pass! Be sure to check it out before arriving to see if it will save you any money!
Evening:
Wrap up day one with a walk down the famed Pier 60 at Clearwater Beach. If you’re an angler, this is a great place to sink a line. This fishing pier is over 1,000 feet long and features a bait house stocked with all the fishing essentials you could need, plus some snacks to enjoy as well.
This pier is a popular spot for night fishing (and dolphin sightings!), but it’s also a wonderful place to visit for the sunset festivities.
Every evening, starting two hours before sunset, the pier comes to life with live music along with arts and crafts activities. Kids will be entertained, and adults will be able to enjoy the ambiance and the beautiful Gulf Coast sunset over the sparkling water.
Day 2: Kayaking & Honeymoon Island State Park
Morning:
Start day two off right by taking a kayak tour in Clearwater. It’s a super fun way to get out on the water and explore some of the area’s hidden secrets alongside an experienced guide. It’s a great way to see the beauty of the water and maybe even some wildlife up close. It’s a unique Clearwater experience you won’t regret!

Afternoon:
After your kayaking adventure, adventure out of the city to Honeymoon Island State Park. It’s only 20 minutes outside of Clearwater and is the perfect opportunity to check “visit a natural barrier island” off your bucket list! The beach there is stunning, and there are beautiful hiking trails to explore as well.
Evening:
After another long day under the sun, slide over to downtown Clearwater for some yummy food and fun entertainment. There are so many delicious restaurants in downtown Clearwater, but none are quite as memorable as Jimmy’s On The Edge.
Located on the rooftop of The Edge Hotel, this 2,500-square-foot rooftop dining space also doubles as a dance floor under the stars. It’s such a fun place to enjoy a meal, offering some of the freshest salads and views in all of the city.
Day 3: Tarpon Springs & A Sunset to Remember
Morning:
Clearwater Beach has some of the most delicious breakfast restaurants. Start day three off on the right foot with a cold brew coffee and cookie dough waffles at Another Broken Egg Cafe.
Afternoon:
Hit the road for a 20-minute drive to Tarpon Springs. Spend the day exploring Florida’s favorite Greek city, which also happens to be the sponge capital of the world. The sponge docks offer so much history throughout the shops and restaurants there. This is a perfect quick day trip if you want to see a bit beyond Clearwater.
Evening:
Round out your getaway with a Clearwater sunset cruise. It’s the perfect way to say goodbye to the city all too soon!

Other things to do in Clearwater:
- Dolphin Cruise: This is a family-friendly favorite activity to consider in Clearwater. Pricing will vary based on the cruise company you go with.
- Shell Key Preserve: Another barrier island to explore, perfect for birdwatching, picnics, and camping.
- Caladesi Island: Requires a ferry ride from Honeymoon Island State Park to access. This is a very peaceful beach, perfect for kayaking through the mangroves or camping along the shoreline.
Where (else) to Eat in the Clearwater:
- Clear Sky on Cleveland: A wonderful seafood eatery with lots of international inspiration. Live music on the weekends makes for an extra special meal!
- Crabby’s Dockside: A great open-air seafood restaurant for families looking to enjoy a delicious meal with the added bonus of stellar beach views.
- Cristino’s Coal Oven Pizza: Count on this family-owned business when you need a break from the seafood fare. Pizzas, pasta, and paninis are all delicious!
Other Tips to Know Before Visiting Clearwater:
- Keep Peak Travel Season in Mind: If you want to make the most out of your time in Clearwater, make sure to weigh the pros and cons when deciding what time of year to visit. A sunny spring getaway is lovely, but know there will be crowds, and travel will be more expensive. Travel to Clearwater will be more cost-effective in the fall, but beach temperatures may not be as enjoyable.
