One Day in Banff (the perfect 24-hour itinerary!)

Okay, let’s dive into all the details. It’s a JAM-PACKED day, but so worth it. You’ll start bright and early and end after sunset, so be prepared to need a nap the next day.

Stop 1: Moraine Lake at Sunrise (3:30 am-10:00 am)

sunrise at lake moraine.

Start your day with sunrise at Moraine Lake, arguably the most famous view in Banff (and my main reason for the trip). With only one day in Banff, you will need to wake up BRIGHT AND EARLY in order to make the most out of your time.

Book the Alpine start shuttle (that departs at 4:00 am and 5:00 am) to ensure you arrive before the sunrises. Shuttle tickets can be a bit tricky to get, so make sure to have alarms set when they first drop in April OR 2 days before your trip (if you don’t have luck the first time). I did get lucky two days before, BUT I was logged in and ready at 8:00 am and had to keep refreshing the page.

After arriving, make the trek up the short Rockpile Trail to enjoy the sunrise. Pack some breakfast, as you’ll want to hang out here for a bit as you watch the colors change.

Then, head down and explore the Shoreline trail a bit. Then, hop in line for the canoe rentals to be one of the first on the water. It’s expensive, but 1000 percent worth it. When we were there, the line started moving a little bit before 8:30 am.

Stop 2: Late Morning: Lake Louise & Teahouse Hike (10:30-2:00 pm)

Lake Louise and Lake Agnes.

After Moraine Lake, head to Lake Louise for your next adventure. You can use your same shuttle ticket to get here. Explore the shoreline for a bit and then head up the trail to the famous Lake Agnes Teahouse.

It’s a 4.3-mile (round-trip) hike that is pretty steep. Plan to spend between 2.5 and 3.5 hours on the hike. At the top, you can get some tea or just enjoy the views of Lake Agnes.

Stop 3: Midday: Banff (2:00-5:00 pm)

views from the top of tunnel mountain in banff.

Head into Banff for a well-earned lunch. Some favorites:

  • Park Distillery (campfire-inspired Canadian fare).
  • Tooloulou’s (hearty comfort food with Canadian flair).
  • Wild Flour Bakery (quick bites, great coffee).

Then you can spend the next few hours window shopping, or if you have the energy remaining, you can tackle Tunnel Mountain for some of the best views of the city. It’s just over 4 miles and pretty steep, but the view at the top is quite the reward. The trailhead is less than 1 mile away from downtown.

Stop 4: Dinnertime: Soaring Mountain Views (5:00-7:00 pm)

Next, hop on the Roam Shuttle from downtown (Banff Local Route 1) to the Banff Gondola. Take the gondola up Sulphur Mountain for panoramic views over Banff town and the Bow Valley. At the top, stroll the scenic boardwalk to the historic Cosmic Ray Station.

Then, head to the Sky Bistro for a dinner with a view (my fav).

Stop 5: Night: Hot Springs or Drinks in Banff

Where to stay in Banff

If you’re not ready for bed yet, unwind at the Banff Upper Hot Springs. The mineral-rich water and mountain backdrop are the perfect way to close out your day. It’s first-come-first served and open until 10 pm during the summer months!

Then, after your soak, you could either head to bed or back downtown for a couple of drinks and live music.

Final Thoughts: One Day in Banff

One day in Banff is short, but with smart planning you can fit in Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, a scenic hike, mountain views, and time in Banff town. This itinerary blends the best of Banff’s iconic landscapes with a little adventure and relaxation.

If you can stay longer, do it (here’s how we spent 3 days in the area)—but if you only have one day, this plan guarantees an unforgettable experience.
