Getting to (and around) Dallas
Dallas is easily accessible via the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), one of the busiest airports in the world (however, I find it one of the easiest airports to navigate!) You’ll find a variety of rental car options at the airport, making it convenient to explore the city and its surrounding areas.
Alternatively, you can also use ride-sharing services or the efficient Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system to get around. Almost everything on this following 3-day Dallas itinerary is located close to downtown, so your Uber rides will always be pretty short (except for to and from the airport).
When is the Best Time to Visit Dallas?
Contrary to popular belief, Dallas enjoys a diverse climate…it’s not always 10000 degrees outside. The best time to visit this North Texas city depends on your preferences.
As a local (and someone who hates the heat), I highly recommend visiting during the spring and fall to enjoy mild temperatures. Surprisingly winter temps oftentimes linger in the 40s so it can be a bit chilly for exploring.
And, if you plan your visit between June-September be prepared for 100 degrees and sunshine every single day. It is great for pool days though.
Where to Stay during your Dallas Weekend Trip?
When planning a three-day getaway to Dallas, the neighborhood that consistently shines as the best choice is Uptown. This vibrant and upscale district seamlessly blends the charm of a historic urban core with the modernity of high-rise buildings, offering a perfect mix of convenience and entertainment.
Uptown’s central location puts you within easy reach of Dallas’s top attractions, including the renowned Dallas Arts District, bustling West Village for shopping and dining, and the picturesque Katy Trail for outdoor recreation.
With a plethora (seriously everywhere you look) of trendy bars, restaurants serving diverse cuisines, and a lively nightlife scene, Uptown ensures you’ll have a dynamic and enjoyable stay, making it the quintessential neighborhood for experiencing the heart and soul of Dallas.
Here are five fantastic hotel recommendations for your stay in Dallas:
- The Joule – Located in the heart of downtown Dallas, The Joule is a luxury boutique hotel known for its stunning rooftop pool and excellent dining options.
- The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas – If you’re looking for elegance and impeccable service, The Ritz-Carlton is the place to stay, offering luxurious rooms and a spa.
- The Adolphus – This historic hotel combines old-world charm with modern amenities and is conveniently situated near popular attractions.
- The Statler – A trendy hotel with a rooftop bar, The Statler is perfect for those who want to experience Dallas’ nightlife.
- Hotel ZaZa – A boutique hotel with a quirky, artistic vibe, Hotel ZaZa offers unique themed rooms and a vibrant atmosphere.
3 Days in Dallas Itinerary
This 3-day Dallas itinerary covers a bit of everything. From nature (weeelllll Dallas’s version of nature) to nightlife, you’ll experience the best of Dallas in this long weekend getaway. SOO, without further ado, here’s how to spend one weekend in Dallas, Texas.
Day 1 in Dallas
Morning:
Start your day with a delicious Texan breakfast at the iconic Hypnotic Donuts. Their mouthwatering donuts and creative breakfast sandwiches are a local favorite.
Then, head right down the road to explore the great outdoors at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. This beautiful attraction features stunning gardens, seasonal exhibits, and scenic views of White Rock Lake.
It’s especially festive during October with hundreds of thousands of pumpkins or the Christmas season where you’ll find different themed decorations each year. However, it’s a great stop no matter the time of year.
Afternoon:
After your stroll through the gardens, head to Dallas Paddle Co to rent a kayak or paddleboard to spend some time on the water. Rentals are available Thursday-Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day and select weekends during the shoulder season.
Alternate! If it’s too hot (or you just need a break from the sun), head to the amazing Dallas World Aquarium instead! This multi-story aquarium is home to almost 300 different species and the famous 40-ft tunnel surrounded by sharks. The resident sloth is also a fan-favorite!
Evening:
After a day of exploration, head to the historic Bishop Arts District for a blend of shopping (there’s over 60 quaint boutiques), dining, and entertainment. Be sure to grab dinner at Lucia, a renowned Italian restaurant offering farm-to-table cuisine.
Tip! I HIGHLY recommend looking into the Dallas CityPass before embarking on this 3-day Dallas itinerary. It could save you up to 47 percent on 4 of the top attractions in the city!
Day 2 in Dallas
Morning:
Fuel up for your second day in Dallas with a hearty breakfast at Bread Winners Café & Bakery. Their cinnamon roll French toast is a must-try!
Discover the fascinating history of Dallas at the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. This museum, located in the former Texas School Book Depository, provides a comprehensive look at the life and legacy of President John F. Kennedy.
Afternoon:
Then, you can walk across the street to tour the Dallas Holocaust and Human Right Museum. Through the use of interactive exhibits, you’ll experience a moving tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. The museum does a great job engaging visitors with its powerful exhibitions, thought-provoking displays, and personal stories that shed light on the horrors of genocide and the importance of human rights.
After a bit of a heavy early afternoon, head to the fun Museum of Illusions for some fun photo ops, and mind-bending experiences. This museum is small, but a fun stop on any Dallas itinerary! It’s recommended that you reserve your tickets online to guarantee entry (especially on weekends).
Evening:
Before it gets dark, head to Deep Ellum to check out the murals around this eclectic neighborhood. There are also plenty of fun shops to see!
For an authentic Tex-Mex experience, head to Pecan Lodge in Deep Ellum. This barbecue joint is known for its mouthwatering brisket and ribs.
Afterward, explore the vibrant nightlife in Deep Ellum, with live music venues and art galleries aplenty. I love the Dueling Piano Bar the most, but it is important to note that Deep Ellum is not the safest neighborhood at night, so be sure to be aware and safe. I always like to leave before midnight.
Day 3 in Dallas
Morning:
Enjoy a leisurely morning at Klyde Warren Park, a unique urban green space built over a freeway. You can grab a coffee from the food trucks and relax in the park while people-watching.
Visit the Dallas Museum of Art to appreciate an impressive collection of art from around the world. The museum often hosts special exhibitions, so be sure to check their schedule for any must-see displays during your visit. It’s free to visit!
Afternoon:
Before leaving the area, hop on the free Mckinney Ave Trolley for a little tour around Dallas. There’s a trolley stop right at Klyde Warren Park (which is right next to the Art Museum). You can hop on and off wherever you’d like.
Then, make your way to the Perot Museum. It’s a massive hands-on interactive science museum that is fun for the whole family!
Evening:
Wrap up your Dallas adventure with a memorable dinner at Knife by Chef John Tesar. Known for its exceptional steak and seafood dishes, Knife is a true culinary gem in the city.
Spend you last night in the Big D admiring the skyline (one of the best in the country) from the top of the Reunion Tower (also included in the Dallas CityPass).
