Best Things to do in Marquette, Michigan

From hiking to watching a local theater performance, the options are endless in this cutsey town! Let’s dive into 14 of the best things to do in Marquette!

Psst: We stayed at The Best Western Plus in Marquette! It was the perfect home base for all of these adventures! Cozy rooms, free breakfast, and close to all the action.

1. Rent Bikes and Cruise the Lakeshore

One of the best ways to get your bearings in Marquette is on two wheels. You can rent a bike from Lakeshore Bike and hit 12 mile the trail that winds along the shoreline of Lake Superior. It’s an easy ride with views of the harbor, beaches, and even a few murals tucked along the way. Bonus: You can easily hop off for coffee or snacks without worrying about parking.

2. Hike Dead River Falls

waterfall in Marquette.

If you’re chasing waterfalls, Dead River Falls is a must. It’s a rugged, unmarked trail (1.7 miles RT) that winds along a series of small falls and cascades. The trailhead does look a bit sketchy, and there’s no service,e so be sure to download the map before arriving.

Bonus! Right before you get to the trailhead parking lot, you’ll pass over a bridge. Pull over here and walk into the woods to see another waterfall (pictured above!). I liked this one better than Dead River Falls and a lot of people miss it!

3. Tour the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse

Marquette Harbor Lighthosue.

The Marquette Harbor Lighthouse is perched above the shoreline with beautiful views of Lake Superior. The tour dives into the maritime history of the area and lasts for about 1 hour. Tours depart from the museum entrance on Tuesdays-Sundays at 11:30, 1:00, and 2:30.

4. Watch a Show at Lake Superior Theater

This little theater is a hidden gem! My mom saw a Mamma Mia performance happening when we were visiting so we knew we had to check it out. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was SO much fun! It takes place in a working boathouse and the talent was so good! Be sure to check their calendar before your visit as the performances are always changing!

5. Hike to the Top of Sugarloaf Mountain

This is probably the most popular hike in Marquette and for good reason. It’s short but steep, with two route options (easy with 300+ stairs and difficult) and absolutely breathtaking views at the top. It’s a good workout with a great reward at the top.

6. Get Ice Cream at Phil’s 550 Store

After your hike to Sugarloaf Mountain, there’s nothing better than a stop at Phil’s 550. It’s a quirky gas-station-meets-convenience-store-meets-ice-cream-stand, with vintage vibes. We enjoyed delicious ice cream on the picnic tables outside.

Psst: It’s easy to miss as it’s right off the highway. Just keep and eye out for their sign (with funny sayings).

7. Watch Cliff Jumpers at Black Rocks Beach

Even if you’re not brave enough to jump (like me…I’m a chicken), watching people leap into Lake Superior from the volcanic rock formations at Black Rocks Beach is a fun way to spend a few hours. Pack a beach towel and spend the afternoon lounging, picnicking, or swimming.

8. Shop at the Farmers Market

The Saturday morning farmers market downtown is packed with local vendors selling everything from wildflowers to pastries to handmade soaps. It takes place from May to October from 9am-1pm. Unfortunately, we didn’t visit on a Saturday, but it would make for a fun morning!

9. Take a Day Trip to Munising

MIners Castle day trip from Marquette to Munising, MI.

Munising is about an hour from Marquette and home to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. If you have an extra day, a day trip here is a must. We check out some waterfalls, the beach, and kayaked the shore. You can find more things to do in Muninsing here!

10. Sample Beer at Black Rocks Brewery

You can’t visit Marquette without stopping at Black Rocks Brewery. It’s a cozy converted house with a backyard beer garden, and the atmosphere is pure U.P. They have live music throughout the week making it the perfect place to wind down after a day of adventures.

11. Drive Through the Lakenenland Sculpture Park

sculpture park in marquette.

Lakenenland is just east of Marquette, and it’s such a fun, unexpected roadside stop. It’s a drive-through sculpture park full of wild, whimsical metal art pieces. It’s free and open 24/7! It was on the way to Munising, so if you are making a day trip there, I’d recommend pairing it with that same day!

12. Have a Beach Day

McCarty's Beach in Marquette.

With Lake Superior just steps away, a beach day is a must during your time in Marquette. McCarty’s Cove was my favorite. The water was clear (and chilly!), the sand soft, and the lighthouse made for the perfect photo backdrop.

14. Rent a Kayak or Take a Guided Tour

If you want to explore some of the smaller lakes and rivers in Marquette, you can rent a kayak from Marquette Adventures. They offer 3 hour rentals all the way up to multi-day rentals that they will deliver right to you!

Or, if you are looking to paddle on Lake Superior herself, you can book a guided paddle with Marquette Mountain Resort.

Here’s a perfect one-day Marquette itinerary! It is jam-packed with adventures, so be prepared for a busy day! And, if you have more time, be sure to check out how to spend one day in Munising as well!
