Breathtaking Waterfalls in New Zealand’s South Island
Before we dive into all the details about these falls, here’s a quick map showing you exactly where to find these South Island waterfalls!
1. Thunder Creek Falls
Located along the Haast Pass, this impressive 28-meter waterfall is easily accessible via a short, well-maintained walking track, making it perfect for travelers of all fitness levels. This was my personal favorite, so I had to put it first on this list!
The falls are nestled within lush rainforest (it feels like you’ve been transported to Jurassic Park), creating a serene atmosphere as you take in the majestic views of cascading water surrounded by towering cliffs.
2. Fantail Falls
Just a 20 minutes’ drive from Thunder Creek Falls, you’ll find the breathtaking Fantail Falls. This stunning 8-meter waterfall is also easily accessible via a short, well-maintained walk.
The falls are named after the playful fantail birds that can often be seen flitting around the area, adding to the charm of the location.
3. Roaring Billy Falls
Roaring Billy Falls, located about a 10-minute drive from the small town of Franz Josef on New Zealand’s West Coast, is a hidden gem that first-time visitors will love. This 20-meter waterfall is easily accessible via a short 20-minute walk through lush native forest, making it an excellent stop for those looking to experience the country’s natural beauty without a strenuous hike.
The falls are known for their thunderous roar as water cascades down into a rocky pool below, which was truly the star of the show. The water color was unlike anything I have ever seen before! Pictures do not do it justice.
4. Stirling Falls
Located in Milford Sound, this awe-inspiring waterfall plunges 151 meters from a steep cliffside into the fjord below, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in the area. Accessible by boat, visitors can get up close to the falls, where the water crashes dramatically into the sound, creating a mist that adds to the magic of the experience.
I was unable to get a good picture of these falls as the boat pulls right up to them and you get completely soaked. I was enjoying the experience! The picture you see above is from other falls we spotted during the boat ride.
5. Lady Bowen Falls
Also located in Milford Sound, this 162-meter waterfall is one of the area’s most iconic natural attractions. Accessible by a short boat ride or a scenic plane ride, the falls are fed by glacial waters from the Bowen River, plunging dramatically into the serene fjord below.
Visitors are treated to an up-close view of the cascading water, surrounded by lush rainforest and towering peaks that create an unforgettable backdrop. The falls not only provide a stunning photo opportunity but also play a vital role in supplying hydroelectric power to the remote Milford Sound community.
6. Sutherland Falls
We spotted the massive Sutherland Falls while we were on our scenic flight to Milford Sound. Although we only saw it from the air, it was absolutely amazing! Our pilot said that helicopters land there (at the top) or you can reach it via a 4+ day hike along the Milford Track.
Plunging a staggering 580 meters (1,904 feet) in three dramatic tiers, it is among the tallest waterfalls in New Zealand and a must on your bucket list! I know I’m already planning a future trip to complete the trek and see these falls up close!
New Zealand Waterfalls South Island Recap
There are countless other waterfalls to explore on the south island that I hope to have the opportunity to explore someday. We were slightly limited on time (we road-tripped in 9 days), but these 6 can be easily reached during a Haast Pass road trip and flight to Milford Sound.
